5 Frames with a Leica M6 and Fuji Pro 400H – By Khalid Ibrahim

By eatpomegranate

This photo story starts with my badass 85 year old grandmother who has been flying around the world to visit her kids. She spent 6 months in London with my uncle and aunt, then flew over to visit us in Detroit for another six months. After her latest stint, she was flying back to Pakistan with a stopover in London. She asked me to accompany her to her first weeklong layover in London and that is how I ended up in England.

When I travel for fun, I like to bring a few rolls of film and one camera. This practice allows me to really get to know a camera and find creative solutions for working with the same film stock in varied conditions. For this trip, it was Fuji Pro 400h and a Leica M6. I shoot very differently when I am using a camera that isn’t part of my professional setup. It’s almost a trigger for my brain to shoot without any expectations. After dropping off my grandmother, my cousin and I decided to rent a car and sped outside the boundary lines of London for a weekend. Here are some photos from the solitude of the English countryside.

Things started to slow down the further we got away from big cities. This donkey was grazing along a pathway in Clovelly. I think this guy (or girl) set the tone for the rest of this weekend.
My cousin and I stopped our car to look over the cliff at these waves. We felt so alone out there but soon realized that we were just around the bend from a surfer who was looking at the same waves.
This is probably one of my favorites silhouettes of a car. Utilitarian design and no flashy vestigial parts. I loved it.
When the waves started to pick up, he rushed down to a small parking lot, changed into a wetsuit and ran down to the shore.
No matter where I am, I gravitate towards people and their stories. This is one story I decided to leave alone because this person was at absolute peace in his car overlooking the ocean.

Thanks so much to 35mmc for having me and to you for looking through my photos. If you would like to follow along on future adventures you can do so on Instagram or my website.

My first thought as a surfer on that cliff shot was damn, nice waves!

When the right waves started rolling in, this dude literally sprinted down. It was so cool to see that joy.

Hi Khalid, looks like it was a great trip. That land rover picture just screams "British". And most grand mothers are badass in one way or another. Mine once asked for a bottle of whiskey and a toyboy.... for her 100th birthday.

I couldn't agree more RE: grand mothers. I am happy you and I get to have these amazing memories of our grand parents. I cherish each of them.

Where's the portrait of your 'badass' Grandma? She sounds like a hoot!
I like the pic of the surfer dude - they look the same all over the world. Surf is surf. BTW, what lens on the M6?

Ah! Fair point! Here is a photo of my awesome grand mother www.flickr.com/photos/eatpomegranate/41427104810 . She is wearing the jacket with the white fur trim. Also, that's me on the right in my ridiculous plaid onesie.
