Got GAS – You Need The Film Camera Gas Factory!

By Hamish Gill

June is a bad month for me for photography. As you’ll notice over the coming weeks, I’ll be unlikely to post a review of anything that involves me taking photos outside. This is largely because June is hay fever month for me. Sometimes I get it bad, other times I get it worse. So as much as possible, regardless of the weather, I tend to lock myself in the house…

And what happens when I get locked in the house..? GAS is what happens. Without the opportunity to actually take photos, I start thinking about cameras. This June I figured if I was going to suffer GAS I might as well share it with the world.

If only there was a platform entirely dedicated to film camera GAS I thought… a place I can share pictures of film cameras and links to blog posts about film cameras on a whim. A social platform perhaps, where other people could join me in the sharing of film camera related content. A place where all this content could all accumulate in one place creating GAS for me and any other poor sucker who happened to accidentally stumble across it… a “GAS Factory”, if you like…

The Film Camera GAS Factory” was born.

Come join me, Stephen Dowling of Kosmo Foto, EM of EMULSIVE, and Bellamy of Japan Camera Hunter on our new shared Facebook group. We’ll be sharing our pictures of film cameras and links to film camera content on our respective blogs… and we’d like you to come and do the same!

I started taking photos at the age of 9. Since then I've taken photos for a hobby, sold cameras for a living, and for a little more than decade I've been a professional photographer and, of course, weekly contributor to 35mmc.

I would like to second Mike. Can you post copies of the images to Instagram as well? I left Facebook due to privacy concerns I would love to see the pictures on Instagram.

"Film camera" GAS is really not such a bad thing. When I consider the number of fantastic, still-in-working-order film cameras I have picked up for less than a couple of tanks of gas/petrol (gas/petrol that I probably would have wasted in some other pursuit if I was not occupied with shooting, processing, and enjoying film) I cannot help but think it is entirely harmless to collect the old cameras. In fact, on balance, given the fact that quite a few of them were purchased for about half of what they go for now, it may even turn out to be profitable. Just yesterday I pocketed one of my Minox cameras before going to what promised to be an enjoyable, but unremarkable event; the camera turned it into a chance to make many new friends. I could not believe the curiosity it drew out of folks I did not even know:....."Is it digital?". My rules are: 1) it must be in working order; 2) if it breaks, it can be repaired; 3) Ebay reflects- "sold items"- the camera frequently sells; 4) high quality glass. There are some instances in which I will purchase a camera with no repair option, e.g. Contax G....only G1....,when it could be purchased for a pittance (purchased mine with the excellent Zeiss 2.0 Planar a few years ago under the two tanks of gas/petrol pricing) and it still works; if it fails, I still have the excellent Zeiss glass to use on mirrorless or convert to M/LTM. What a deal! When one considers avarice and vice so innate to the human condition, "film camera" GAS seems more an elixir than an illness. GAS On!

Something that I won't be able to share in Mr. Dowling, I will never get a "friend-face" account.

But I get GAS too, however, nobody would want me to share that.

In the end though it is all about the pictures, so I recommend that we accept Ken Rockwell's invitation to FART...
