5 Frames With a Leica M6 and Kodak Portra 800 – By Martin Smith

By photowalkme

A couple of weeks ago I attended a Beers and Cameras meetup and photo walk in Birmingham organised by this site’s very own Hamish Gill. I took my Leica M6TTL as usual, this is my go to camera for most occasions.

At the beginning of the walk Hamish handed out some film given to him by Kodak Alaris. I took a roll of Portra 800 as I really like Portra and the weather wasn’t quite good enough for slow film. I already had some film loaded so had to finish that first before loading the Portra. During a water break one of the other photographers on the walk, Ashley Carr, let me try his Leitz Elmar 90mm f4 lens. A rather odd looking lens, but the photo I got using it, really showed what a lovely lens it is. While not a great portrait in itself I could see the potential. So much so I’ve since bought the one Hamish had for sale on this site.

I didn’t manage to finish the roll while in Birmingham, I finished it near where I work in Reigate. I didn’t really get anything that great from the roll, but I do like Portra 800.

As far as I can remember, yes. I generally shoot most film at box speed.

These images are so sharp! The DOF is really useful, not over the top bokeh but nicely separated and the colours are perfectly rendered. Especially the greens! Oh and it was great to meet you up there.

Thanks Robert. I've fallen in love with Portra again and the 90mm lens. Great to meet you too.

Glad you liked the 90 Elmar. I find myself using it more than I ever thought I would.

Still no sign of the commission cheque from Hamish for effectively selling his lens for him ;)

It's a great lens, I really like it. I'm so pleased that I was able to try yours. I'm sure the cheque is just delayed in the post.
