Ricoh GR1s – Shots from a lost weekend

By Hamish Gill

I would be fibbing if I said my late teens and early 20’s weren’t somewhat filled with the actions of a self confessed hedonist. But life changes these ways, responsibility, jobs, partners and children come along and those lost days of selfish pleasure become a thing of the past… Until that is a stag weekend rears it’s head.

A good friend of mine, whom I shared habitation with back in those days, is getting married next month. So last weekend we, with 6 others we took a minibus to leeds for a few shandies. Suffice to say a few shandies turned quickly into a few more and it was almost like I was 22 again…

It was a very enjoyable weekend … but midweek after and I’m still feeling somewhat jaded. Still, I enjoyed weekend and the photography opportunities it presented to me so all is not lost. I thought, being as the opportunities to take photos were taken advantage of with the trusty Ricoh GR1s, I would share a select few here.

First day, shortly after arriving. Smiling-arms-in-the-air is the stag, G. Taken with XP2

Also XP2. I am really starting to trust this camera when it comes to its use of flash. Exposure is often spot on!

Shandies!

A good bit into the merriment, again, the flash doing well not to blow out the picture.

The second day and the camera was loaded with a film that is new to me, Kodak 400cn. A film I actually find my self liking as much as I like XP2 … It seems a little smoother somehow

This is the shot of the trip for me. The light (and the Whiskey) were fantastic in this bar!

Again, the kodak film just seems a touch less grainy and a touch less contrasty than I would have expected from XP2

The GR1 showing off it’s lenses character nicely here.

I think that is probably as much as I need to subject this blog to!
A great weekend, but I certainly couldn’t do it again for a while! The Ricoh on the other hand did stirling work. I am beginning to feel comfortable with it’s ability to take flash photography, which is something I rarely say about a camera!

Hi Hamish,

Love these shots, looked like a great weekend.
I have a quick question about shooting with flash on the Ricoh.
I've just bought a Ricoh GR1 and also found myself taking it out on a few nights out where it's too dark to shoot without flash.
When using the flash, do you leave the camera in P mode so that it sets the aperture automatically or do you manually set the aperture extremely wide eg f1.4?
I've also found that the camera has trouble auto focusing on very dark conditions and even with the flash turned on, the shutter speed still flashes to say it is set to more than 1/30th of a second, so worryingly slow for an clear picture. How do you deal with these issues or do you just trust that the camera will get it right automatically?

I'm still on my 1st roll of film so have yet to see the results of my flash photography experiment but just thought I'd see if you have any tips.
Cheers and keep the posts coming, really interesting!

If you shoot in program mode it will select an appropriate aperture to get the exposure right based on the distance you are focused. In aperture priority mode I can't do that so it uses slow-sync mode. Beyond that choice just point and shoot - I would have been somewhat inebriated when I took most of these, and they've come out fine. Let me know how you get on won't you!
