Water fight fun with a Canon Sureshot A1

By Hamish Gill

Not so long ago a pal from over on RPF wrote a review on this camera. I pretty much decided there and then that I wanted a waterproof camera and if I could find one, one of these. I didn’t expect to find one so soon though… I’m not going to write an in depth review, you can read Chris’s thoughts here. I am though going to show you some photos in the hope that they will speak for themselves. Not so much the quality, although I have no issues in that department, but the joy that this camera enabled me to capture.

Connie loves water and she loves squirting people with the hose! She is a happy little child anyway, but running around in the sunshine squirting me with that hose gives her so much joy. This of course makes me incredibly happy, as does being able to capture those moments. Suffice to say, these are some very precious shots I’m sharing with you here, I really hope the images come some way to portray the fun we had!

I loaded the camera with a roll of Agfa Vista Plus. £1 a roll from Poundland, and you really can’t complain at the quality!

The first soaking.

Day two, the soaking continues.

I guessed a bit of fill would help, I sorta wish I had used the flash more times … Ah well, im sure it won’t be the last time.

And last, but not least … I think this is my favourite!

The camera is surprisingly small, admittedly bigger than most compact cameras, but certainly not a problem to carry around. This is definitely a keeper! I can at last sell the crappy digital waterproof sony I have!

Thanks for sharing that John, and I'm really pleased you like the results. They are pretty impressive to my eye! I would be interested to see a shot the shaws the flare at its worst. I guess bit of plastic that covers the lens is probably the cause...
Superior is pretty colourful film, I guess it ideal ... it certainly suits the beach shots! I live the one of the parasol!

Hamish,

I was looking for a small digital camera for the beach and water sports before I read you blog about the Canon Sure Shot A1.

I found one on Ebay for $22 and figured why not.

On Sat afternoon I went to Pismo Beach, CA and put a role of Fuji Superia X-TRA 400 through it. Not the greatest film around, but cheep and maybe a good combination for what I'm going to use the A1 for.

The results were very good. Some flare with a couple into the sun.

Overall, this will be fun to use when water could ruin the expensive gear. Here's a link to a Flicker set I created for this camera.
