5 Frames with a 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1 – Barnaby Nutt

A while back, I wrote a bit about my new 7Artisans, 50mm lens that I’d bought from Hamish and paired with my M6. That first trip out with it involved a wander around Oxford and as you might have read, I was very pleased with the results on film.

For one reason or another, I’ve not really used the lens too often since, but this weekend had the opportunity to take it on a visit to Newcastle, spending a couple of hours exploring the magnificent city. Adding the 7 Artisans as a fast-fifty rounds off my ‘dream kit’ that I’ve been putting together over the last few years. Despite being the cheapest way to buy an M-Mount lens, it fits right in.

For the purposes of this post, I’m sharing the snaps took using the M Monochrom and 7Artisans combo. These pictures are not a lens test – there’s no brick wall shot looking for distortion or frames of blank space to hunt out a vignette. They’re just pictures taken ‘in the wild’, in normal conditions, and as you can see, the lens continues to perform very nicely.

Online, you’ll find plenty of comparisons of the 7 Artisans to others that are ten or even 20 times the price. You can read at length about how it performs at unlikely apertures and in test conditions. Each to their own perhaps, but I’d sooner just get on and use it…
