2025 involved me traveling a bit for work and pleasure. On one particular trip, my partner accompanied me to Prague and Vienna for a few days before she flew back and I remained in Prague for a conference. Having left my partner, I found myself unprepared for the cold which descended and was soon sick. Febrile and exhausted the next few days were unpleasant and vapid despite being in such a beautiful city. I was terribly lonely and wished to return home as soon as possible.
The photo above was taken in Vienna the day before my partner had to leave. It was evening and light was fast fading, we walked through a quiet but gorgeous shopping arcade, the wall lights just turning on. It was a beautiful photo in its own right, but receiving it (receiving the scans of it rather, I’m not brave enough to venture into a darkroom yet, unlike some of you), I realized this was the last time I enjoyed myself there, the dying sunlight and dim exposure of the photo almost reflects displeasure approaching.
That also taught me quite an important lesson, which was that health and love are two of the most precious things in the world to me. Without them, no matter where I might be, exotic or beautiful, I might discover myself to be hollow and empty within.
