A Pair of Unusual Lenses Adapted to a Fuji GFX 50S

By Daniel Martínez Barber

Fuji GFX cameras produce extremely high-quality images, but native lenses are very expensive, hence my need to look for alternative options. I recommend the website deltalenses.com, where you can find information on projection and enlarging lenses, which can be used with helicoid adapters.

In this article, we’ll discuss a 6×6 cm format Kodak Ektar 75mm F4.5 enlarging lens and a 35mm format Reflecta Agomar 90mm F2.4 slide projection lens. Both lenses cover the 44x33mm sensor of Fuji GFX cameras, are free of chromatic aberrations, geometric distortion, and remarkably sharp.

Kodak Ektar 75mm F4.5

The Kodak Ektar 75mm F4.5 lens is made in the USA and should not be confused with the same lens made in the UK, which performs worse. It is a Heliar-type lens with a 5-element construction. It is very small; in the photo, it appears next to a one-euro coin.

The mount is a 30mm threaded mount with a 0.5mm pitch. To fit the lens, you’ll need the following parts:

M30 30mm x 0.5mm to M42 42mm x 1mm adapter.
M42 42mm x 1mm to M65 65mm x 1mm adapter for helicoids.
M65 to M65 helicoid adapter with 25-55mm extension.
M65 to Fuji GFX adapter.
Fuji GFX rear lens cap.

This is what the camera looks like with the lens attached.

The lens cost 87 euros on eBay and the adapters cost 66 euros on Aliexpress, for a total of 153 euros. Below are a couple of photos taken at F4.5 and their crops at 100%.

The Reflecta Agomar 90mm

The Reflecta Agomar 90mm F2.4 lens is made in Germany and features a 4-element construction. It should not be confused with the other Agomar F2.8 lens, which only has 3 elements and performs worse.

The lens diameter is 42.5mm and to adapt it we will need the following parts:

42.5mm to M52 adapter ring with 3 Allen key nuts.
M52 52mm x 1mm to M65 65mm x 1mm adapter for helicoids.
M65 to M65 helicoid adapter with 25-55mm extension.
M65 to Fuji GFX adapter.
Fuji GFX rear lens cap.

This is what the camera looks like with the lens attached.

The lens cost 50 euros on eBay and the adapters cost 80 euros on Aliexpress, for a total of 130 euros. Below are a couple of photos of my friend Alberto took at F2.4 and their crops at 100%.

Impressive results Daniel and very ingenious combinations. The adapter with the Alan key adjustment vould be very useful.

Dear Tony, thanks for your comment. There are Alan key adapters of different sizes, so you can adapt lenses with other diameter than 42.5mm.

Daniel,
I am very impressed that a projector lens is so sharp! Sure, an Ektar is going to be sharp, but a projector lens? Thanks for that info. I occasionally make box cameras and I'll look for that projector lens.

Dear Jeffery, thanks for your comment. If you want an even sharper lens than the Reflecta Agomar 90mm F2.4, you can try the Leica Super-Colorplan 90mm F2.5. It also got the same level of color correction which is almost apochromatic. But you will need to pay 5 times the price of the Reflecta projector lens.

Very interesting! I have recently entered the GFX world and have to agree - the Fuji GFX lenses are eye wateringly expensive. I'm using a smart adapter to take Nikon AF lenses and that combination works extremely well if you don't mind cropping out the vignette from some lenses or using the 35mm mode.
