Carl Zeiss 80mm F2.8 SL66 Mount Adapted to Pentax 67

By Chi Zhang

The Pentax 67 system lacks a 35mm equivalent lens with large aperture. What, there is a 75AL? I’m too broke to have ever heard of it. So, I’ll have to adapt it myself. A Carl Zeiss 80mm F2.8 in Rollei SL66 mount is chosen. There is also a Rollei SLX version, but that one needs to modify the housing.

Update: The protruding part at the rear can be removed, no need to cut it off

There are readily available adapter kits online, but they are not cheap, so I decided to DIY. Since there is no SL66-M65 adapter available, a 3D printed one is required. For the focus helicoid, I use a 13-24mm, which is a bit pricey, but it extends the longest while still focusing to infinity. As for the mount adapter, a 1.5mm thin one is suitable. There is a protruding edge on the rear of the lens that protects the glass, which will interfere with the mirror. Stupid I went in bold and milled it off directly. As pointed out recently by a fellow reader, this part can be removed by simply unscrewing 3 screws, no need to cause damage. After removing the protruding metal part, the mirror will not hit the rear element. Oh, and there is a positioning screw behind the mount of the lens, which shall be simply removed.

Mounted on the Pentax 67, this Zeiss lens looks handsome and is quite compact. The minimum focus distance is around 80cm. The lens fully covers 67 format with minimal vignetting. Resolution is excellent, with impressive sharpness within the focus area. Zeiss Planar is no slouch.

This focal length is perfect for taking photos across the table. A bright 2.8 aperture paired with beautiful bokeh, now I can take out my mammoth Pentax 67 to grab everyone’s attention in the restaurant.

In Conclusion

Pros
1. Affordable alternative to 75AL, total cost including lens and modification CNY3200 (US$450)
2. Sharp, beautiful bokeh
3. Fully Covers 67

Cons
1. The helicoid focus ring is narrow and slightly difficult to turn
2. Self-made adapter did not achieve 60cm closest focusing distance

I'm in awe of your ability to simply decide to adapt one thing to another. I suppose if I had access to a 3D printer and a shop I'd try my hand at it too.

Very nice results! Looking forward to more content from you... (go ahead and drag that monster out the next time you're in a fancy restaurant but I'm certain people will be looking at your friend and not your camera).

Thanks for the comment. I do not have a 3D printer, I used online 3D printing service instead.

These adaptations of yours produce such beautifu images, colour and great sharpness and bokeh. This selection is no exception. The detail and modelling are exceptional with this fairly modern lens.

This is a great read and awesome modification. I never thought of this lens as a medium wide but the Zeiss glass is peerless.
Color has that natural Zeiss tone. However the Lucky film looks off to me. Almost as if the color dye layers are not aligned properly. This could be an artifact of scanning a new film with no profile.
The ORWO NC 400 surprised me. It looks great. I have some trepidation about this film; maybe you can tell me what ISO you shot the NC 400 at? I currently have a roll in my Leica M3 and no idea what to expect.
Thank you for posting these beautiful, natural family portraits. Certainly something to treasure in the future.

Your are certainly right about Lucky's color. I developed and scanned myself, and I am still trying get hold of Lucky's color. It has too much red. The official scanning shop of Lucky does a much better job. Besides, Lucky 120 still exhibits banding, while 135 got rid of it. Orwo 400 is nice in 120. I shot at EI200 since it was a very bright day. But in 135, it is really grainy.

Not to hijack Chi's post, but I shoot a lot of NC400, it's one of my favorite films. It's best shot at EI 200 or 250 and xpro'd in ECN-2. Set both the black & white point in your preferred editing software and don't be afraid to tweak the color balance to remove the cyan & green cast. Basically, it's a very cold, almost tungsten balanced film, IIRC it's balanced at 4300 K (!). It can be grainy compared to Ultramax 400, but it gives really nice colors, especially rich reds, and if you like contrast, it is a contrasty film. For colorful scenes, especially ones with reds, it really makes it pop, winter scenes feel cold, and if you're shooting urban photography, it can really enhance the grittiness of the scene.

Thanks for that info on NC 400! I may try to shoot it with my tungsten’s lights. I have some ECN chemistry as well.

Amazing images! Beijing? I think I recognize those hutongs... Super cool! I hope someone can make those 3d printed files available.

There's something about a small chrome nosed lens on a Pentax 67....
