Forest, woman, sea, sunset

Through the woods to the shore – My image of the year 2025

By Klaus Wirz

Since the reunification of Germany, traveling to the Baltic Sea beyond the former border has become uncomplicated, and I was one of the first to visit these places—frozen in time—as a tourist and have returned since then at least once a year. Before 1989, the GDR coastline was a restricted area and one needed a special permit to visit; the Danish coast, and therefore freedom, lies only a few nautical miles from the beach, and the temptation to leave the workers’ paradise in a rubber dinghy, in a small sailboat  or even on an air mattress, was simply too great.

My picture ties into that atmosphere: on a rainy day my wife and I hiked through the forest (no public roads, only forestry paths) to reach the wild and, at this time of year, completely deserted beach. Here, the forest—a mixture of pines and beeches—meets the sea directly. Autumn and winter storms repeatedly tear the trees into the water, creating a wild shoreline. As always, my wife walked ahead while I was busy taking photographs. Shortly before we reached the beach, the rain stopped, and in the late afternoon, just before sunset, the light took on a magical quality. Fortunately my Rolleiflex was ready to shoot, the exposure was set correctly, and all I had to do was press the shutter…

Rolleiflex 3.5/75mm Planar, Kodak Portra 800 @ 640.

About The Author

By Klaus Wirz
My first photographs were taken when I was twelve, with an Agfa Isolette I. Technical curiosity eventually claimed that camera, but it had already planted the seed for my love of medium-format photography. My path, however, led not into photography but into ophthalmology. I am officially retired now, still working occasionally, and finally blessed with ample time to photograph.

Curtis, I’m glad you like the image and the explanation that goes with it—thank you. I always find it a difficult decision how many words a photograph needs, but I can’t be in this forest and on this beach without thinking about history.

Hi Klaus,
What a wonderful image, only enhanced by the historic context. The mix of conditions with heavy fog shrouding Denmark but a bit of warm light on your wife, the sand and the grass, and the desolation of the bare branchless trees is a fantastic mix of tones and mood. I think it's a really good and subtle use of color on Portra. Well done!

Scott, thank you very much for your compliment. You’re right—the photograph was taken in that brief and magic moment between the end of the rain and the emergence of the sun. I was very lucky (and, not entirely modestly, prepared). The Portra—you’re right about that too—was perfect for the light. In general, Portra and the Rolleiflex are a dream combination. If only the film weren’t so expensive…

I like this photographic composition and light. It's beautiful and melancholy at the same time. In fact it reminds me of one of my favorite painters; Caspar David Friederich. Surely you know his work. He once said; "A picture must not be invented. It has to be felt." I think your photo embodies that philosphy of creative work. On a technical note I also have a Rolleiflex 2.8 Planar E2. It is one of my top cameras and the lens is magical in the right light. I just need to get it fixed!

Russ, I think you’ve seen right through me; deep in my photographic heart, I am a romantic pictorialist. But it’s also true that the place itself is very seductive: C. D. Friedrich painted some of his most famous works not far from this spot, and the island of Rügen with its white chalk cliffs is close by. Well—and the Rolleiflex… Take it down from the shelf and have it repaired; it would be a shame to let it go to waste.

Hi Klaus,

This is a wonderful photograph which reminds me that I still want to travel to the Baltic Sea coast and hike through those forests. Beautiful!
