Spam Attack – Fixed, but a quick warning

By Hamish Gill

Just a quick note to some contributors that would have been sent spam comments today…

We have just swapped to a new antispam system as I was getting bombarded by spam signups on the website and the old system just wasn’t working any more. In the switchover today there was an hour or so when a load of spam got through.

Apologies, to kick off, obviously this is not cool.

But also, please don’t click on any of the links!

I just did by accident when trying to quickly mark a load of comments as spam, and it definitely was not safe for work, safe for viewing by anyone young, or predisposed to being shocked by the sort of imagery that can be found on the internet’s more dark corners.

And just for clarity, this won’t impact anyone viewing the website normally, it is just aimed at the few people who contribute to the website who had a spam comment posted on one of their articles.

The joys of running a big website… … ‍♂️

I noticed that and put every post I was able to into Spam.
The other thing is that the spammers have been commenting with seemingly genuine comments - I marked the comments as spam but some got through as other(s) seem to have accepted them . Accepting them allows a window for them to hack so check the authors name before accepting.
