With another year nearly closed off it’s time to fondly review this years photographic adventures. It’s been a tough year emotionally as I closed down my darkroom, after 65 years of use, and sold/gave away a large amount of camera/darkroom gear. My days of backpacking forty pounds of large format gear into the Rocky Mountains are now unfortunately behind me. Analog gear for the most part is only being fondled rather than put to use. It’s been a couple of years of transition on many fronts.
On the positive side I have almost always had a camera with me whenever I left the house. All be it, digital. When processing my files I always look to my darkroom days to end up with an image that follows my analog spirit.
The image presented today was taken in broad daylight while my sweetie and I were out for a drive in the farm lands of southern Alberta, Canada. The processing is inspired by my old friend Bruce Barnbaum. While working in the same darkroom as Bruce, I would marvel at how he would print an image almost black and then bring it back to what he wanted with an artistic use of bleach. During the years when I helped my brother-in-law during harvest we would work well into the night and sometimes to the early morning. My “Best of 2025” image reminds me of walking back to the farm house in the pitch black of night.
Fortunately I have friends who can process my film for me, so I hope to use up the large amount of B&W and C41 film I have. Maybe my best of 2026 will be from an analog negative, scanned and printed.
The image above was created with a Panasonic S5II and 24-104mm Panasonic lens.
Eric

on reading the newsletter and watching your photo, it was impossible not to think back to AA's "Moonrise" masterpiece, as John recalls above And, like Jonathan, I found this image to have some quiet, vibrant solitude, but "rich", not empty at all. It truly is a wonderful image.
You mention it's been 65 years since you started working around your darkroom, so this suggests you've been around photography even a bit longer, which qualifies for quite a 20th century kid, who can capture this image without a tripod. What a great photographer you must be, Eric, presumably with a little more than 65 springs behind and an insatiable quest for beauty to be converted into light and shadows.
Long may run, Eric - and long may you capture light and shadow like this.

It would be fascinating to see how a print would look made using Olivier Desmet's technique (https://www.35mmc.com/15/11/2025/printing-digital-photographs-using-the-traditional-silver-gelatin-darkroom-process/)
