5 Frames With an Olympus OM10 and F.Zuiko 50mmm 1.8 & Expired Fuji Superia Xtra – By Gavin Bain

When I started getting serious about photography, and more specifically shooting film, my dad found some rolls at his old work. He came home one day with a box of Fujifilm Superia Xtra 400. About 10 rolls all up. This obviously meant that I didn’t need to buy more film for a while and being younger at the time, this sat well with me. So I shot half of the rolls pretty quickly.

At first I hated the results and decided it must be a horrible film stock, and that I was going back to Kodak’s colours and shelving the Fuji. Little did I know the film was just expired, and had been for a while.

Just recently in November 2018, I was visiting my parents place in Sydney and discovered my old scans on their computer. Being able to now see that the film was expired and having honed my tastes over the years, I actually really love these images!

The colour shifts are really quite pleasant and communicate the feeling of time in a way that I feel is quite authentic. I wouldn’t use it for everyday use, but I would definitely shoot more expired film in a heartbeat.

The following shots were taken on my Olympus OM10 and F.Zuiko 50mmm 1.8

If you made it this far, I appreciate you giving me some of your time to read my experience shooting with this set up. Remember, stay broke and shoot film!

[…] If you’ve read any of my previous contributions to this website, you may recall that I started my photographic journey with a pair of Praktica’s. My first was a Praktica MTL3 and then a Praktica LLC. As much as I loved those camera’s I was searching for something smaller and inconspicuous shooting for people on the streets of Sydney, so I purchased an Olympus OM10 which I have reviewed on 35mmc before here.
