5 Frames with Ilford Ortho Plus

By Roger

I’d been wanting to try some slower films and after a review decided to try some Ilford Ortho Plus. The opportunity to try it out came with a short trip to Somerset, so I put a roll in the Bronica’s 35mm back. I haven’t thought very carefully about what difference it should make to the images, so I just took photos as usual. I developed them in Rodinal 1:50. Part of the reason I used Rodinal was that when I came to take the film out of the camera, I used the catch for opening the back instead of the one to release the back, with the result that there was a light leak. Panicking that I might have fogged the whole film I wanted to develop it quickly, so I could stop any anxiety or self-recrimination about the mistake, and it was quicker to use Rodinal rather than prepare a batch of Caffenol. I scanned using an Epson V700 at 6,400 dpi.

My initial reaction is that there are some that turned out as I hoped they would, and overall the results seem promising. Aside from the three shots that were spoiled by the light leak (lucky there!) they don’t seem any worse than the FP4+ and APX100 I have used recently, and some of them seem a bit better.

One I like more than these is a shot of woodland on the Quantocks. I loved the knarled trees, and thought this shot brought out the shapes in a way I liked: i like the tones, though still work to do on composition. I guess the reduced sensitivity to red compared with “normal” film might have darkened the trees relative to the foliage, though in that case I am not sure why the path did not get darkened too.

The next one reminded me of Nash point on the other side of the Bristol channel, with the pronounced strata in the cliffs, sloping down to a shelf of bare rock and large stones.

However, my favourite after the forest image was another one of the beach.

I am not sure how well this comes out at web resolution, but I liked the tones on this one. At higher resolution there are just about enough really bright tones on the driftwood to provide foreground interest though this is perhaps not so clear on the web resolution one.

Will I try it again? I bought two rolls, so yes. And I will be very tempted to buy some more. Will I have the patience to take shots on Ortho+ and identical shots on Pan F or FP4+ to see what difference the emulsion makes? Probably not. I would be interested to know what experience others have of this film.

These are awesome - especially the forest, and the cliffs. But the forest! I mean, that would probably have looked good with HP5 also, but still. I have also tried Ortho, with mixed results. I used DD-X, but I do like the look you achieved better. I'm still not totally sure what to do with Ortho, but I would like to get more. I have tried 'general' photos (like you, using 120) - mine were not that good though, too smudgy looking and flat. Then I photographed my daughter's graduation, and these looked great. 35mm in DD-X. The skin tones were a bit unkind (there was a lot of makeup though, so not as bad as I feared), but the dresses looked superb, with almost an IR glow to them. I am inspired to buy more!

Great set of photos Roger! I'm glad that someone else (besides me) likes to shoot on a rocky beach. I really like that first shot of the pier.

Thank you both for the comments. I agree with you, Christof, that Ortho+ may be difficult to use, though I have not tried HP5 (apart from decades ago in the pre-digital era) because I assumed it would have worse grain. On my second roll of Ortho+ despite it being a slow film, I was finding even its grain a bit obtrusive, though maybe that is the Rodinal, or maybe it is simply the result of scanning at 6400 dpi and then viewing at 100%. I will withhold judgment until I have done some darkroom prints, and possibly till I have tried some other developers. D76/ID11 is currently on my shopping list.

Roger - HP5plus in 120 is very good with DD-X, and to my eye even ok (grainwise) with Rodinal 1+50. I do prefer Delta 400 though (DD-X), so that's often my 400 go-to. DD-X is expensive though, so if you shoot a lot it's not your best bet!

Thanks for the advice which I shall remember, though as my only roll of HP5 at the moment is 10 or 20 years past its use-by date, i may pass on an expensive developer. Maybe Rodinal had similar warnings and I have just forgotten them. It makes me appreciate coffee and washing soda.

These all look good, I do like the second one a lot. I have had nice results with the Ortho 25 but haven't tried the 80 yet. Hopefully one of these days, while the sun is still in summer mode.

I am preparing to travel to the north of Italy, and I took a few films with me. Chief among these are3 2 rolls of Ortho 80, and I can't wait to see the results. Probably a few frames will make their way in here :)
