Worldwide Half-Frame Photography Day 6th September 2025!

By Yant Martin-Keyte

Inspired by Holga week and worldwide pinhole day I’d like to share half-frame day with you.

It’s all about having fun celebrating this great analogue format!

There will be a photo-competition with three categories, People, Places and Possibilities. To give you a chance to finish 72 frames you’ll have a week (1-7th Sept) to take photos to enter.

There are seven photowalks organised already on the day here and anyone can organise one for their town.

So where did this come from? Well let me answer the question we put to all the team of organisers.

Why did you want to organise WWHFPD?

I started out looking for a theme for a photowalk like Holga week, and thought doing one for half-frame would be fun. I had a look around, asked a few people, and there wasn’t a half-frame day. At which point I thought there should be and just cracked on and set it up.

What made you want to try half-frame, and what was your first half-frame camera?

I’d been aware of the Olympus half-frames in the 80/90’s, but having moved from 110 to 35mm wasn’t keen then on going smaller again.

Zoom to the 2020’s and I was buying all the film cameras I couldn’t afford when they came out. The Kodak H35 came out so I thought I’d give it a try.

What is it you like most about Half-frame?

Different hf cameras offer different things, but common to all of them is the increased feeling of freedom you get with 72 frames to use. This also makes more expensive film a bit more economical, I got great results with Velvia in my Pentax 17 recently.

Portrait orientation is also a good subconscious nudge to look at things differently.

Favourite subject and/or half-frame photo?

It tends to be the same as I would take in ‘full-frame’, though the compact size of some half-frames encourages me to take it out more often. A favourite photo was this triptych taken with Velvia in the Pentax 17.

Your top tip/s for shooting half frame photos?

Relax! 72 frames isn’t a challenge but a freedom.
Embrace the diptych, triptychs, and more.

It seems that 'half frame day' should end at 1pm. Are you extending it to full frame hours?

I did contemplate doing a half day, but why limit the fun! Another idea was to have it 72hrs long.
