NEWS: SIRUI adds 150mm Focal Length To 1.6X T2.9 Venus Anamorphic Lens Series

By Molly Kate

SIRUI is adding another lens to their affordable 1.6x anamorphic lens lineup, the Venus 150mm T2.9 1.6x full frame option. This newcomer rounds out SIRUI’s Venus T2.9 1.6x lineup that already includes 35mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, and 135mm versions. The company established in 2001 is dedicated to creating high-quality anamorphic and cine lens options but at a more affordable price.

With the unique ability to create the “cinematic” look, anamorphic lenses essentially manipulate a standard field of view to be able to produce a wider frame. The 1.6x refers to how much the lens can stretch or squeeze the frame out in the final result. So the Venus 1.6x anamorphic series can create a 2:4:1 ratio from shooting on a 3:2 setting. If using a 16:9 ratio, the lens will be able to produce a 2:8:1 aspect.

SIRUI says this helps separate the subject from the background and at the same time contain more details. They have also created a 1.25x adapter to the 1.6x lenses for an ever bigger squeeze of 2x.

Another newer feature, SIRUI has brought the minimum focusing distance closer to 0.58m to work better with close-up shooting styles. This is a change from previous lenses that couldn’t focus closer than 1m.

For consistency, the 150mm lens has been designed with the same gear positions as the others and has the same 82mm filter thread.

“Suitable for filming street scenes and portraits while shooting beautiful flares and oval bokeh with it, the lens can be used to shoot very cinematic scenes for videos.” – SIRUI

SIRUI has been making anamorphic lenses since 2015 after initially getting into the industry by creating award-winning tripods. They now have a large 1.6x full-frame lineup as well as equally as many options for ASP-C sensors at a 1.33x squeeze.

Mounts available for the 150mm lens include the E, RF, L, and Z variations. The lens will be priced at $1499 (USD) but from launch until August 31, 2023, it will be discounted to $1,274. Additionally, Sirui tells us the first 20 customers will get an early bird perk of $1,199. The company will also be running a sale on the other lenses within the Venus lineup as well.

As a mechanical engineer, the second-last image (of the lens mount) worries me. A lot! The finishing looks rough, and the very sharp corner at the 11-O'Clock position on the lens mount looks really scary - very sharp and just ready to drop little chips of metal right into your camera!

No matter how attractive a lens might be for its optical performance, please keep in mind that it is a big lump of glass and metal closely interfacing with the internals your delicate and very expensive camera bodies.

It is a boon to photographers that manufacturers now make sure that their camera and lens systems are strongly protected against their operating environment. But if you willingly introduce poorly-machined components through the camera lens mount, you are asking for trouble!

Sirui are a well respected lens brand, I very much doubt their lenses would damage a camera
