Selecting photos is a tough job in my opinion. Nevertheless the choice for my pair of shots had been clear because this little “siblings” series occupied me for a long period of this year, and the quantitative output had been low. I used a slow camera, a view camera with a 120 film back and i spent quiet and happy hours on our local city-hill where I walked several times, to see if I could find a first scene or get a second shot as seasons changed.
Further more, for the first time I printed a set photos to give them their real space. As printing – and learning about it – also took its time I can honestly say that this pair took almost a year to be finished.
The winter shot was taken on the last days of february and I liked the contrast of the organic structure of the tree and the old high-rise building. Reinforced by the color contrast though winter colors tend to be painfully week. It would have been a keeper as a single photo, but not the strongest composition – a bit boring in the end ?
The spring shot was taken at the beginning of june. Of course I wouldn’t have taken the shot if not as the younger sister of the winter shot. I wished the high-rise building would have been visible a little more. The fact that i photographed a frame that did not work on its own was an interesting experience. But i liked it in a way.
To put the prints of this pair together was a satisfying moment I was sure this is my photo of 2025.
