Your photo of the year 2026 (and my photo of the year 2026)

By Hamish Gill

David Pauley has cornered me into this ‘photo of the year’ lark again by sharing his ‘Take two‘ and suggesting that we go for a repeat of last year… so here we are again…! Of course, I am totally on board with it! So as with last year, this photo is my photo of the year… and it’s also my invitation to submit yours!

First, a bit about my photo:

This is our dog Kippy – you have probably seen a few photos of him, I use him as a test subject for the AF capability when I am testing lenses. In fact, the photos are often like this one, but, well, a bit less interesting. This shot was taken not as a test. Instead it was taken because I saw him running at full pelt toward me on the beach and I happened to be armed with the Tamron 50-400 on my Zf. I have reviewed a lot of lenses this year, but the Tamron was a favourite, it was also the lens I used exclusively on holiday in Wales. It’s also an awesome enough lens to let me take photos like this. The best bit about the photo though, is just how much of a monster he looks… he is not a monster, he’s a great big softy that just happens to have big sharp teeth that were revealed in freeze frame. His crazy eyes, massive tongue, add to the whole vibe, as does the sand you can just about see kicked up behind him. I just love the photo, and just like last year’s it has loads of great memories attached to it too!

Next, your shot (copy/pasted from last year – why change what worked)

David has obviously already shared his image, as I have too. So now it’s your turn! If you are a contributor to the website, then please feel free to upload a one shot story talking about your favourite photo. If you can do this before the 18th of December, I will make sure they are all published, then sometime around the new year, I will make another post containing everyone’s photos – here’s last year’s photos. We can then have a little poll to decide who’s photo is everyone else’s favourite. As with last year, if I am feeling generous around the time, I will then dig around in my film stock fridge and send the photographer who took the favourite photo a few rolls of film as a little prize.

A couple of terms of entry:

Obviously this is all pretty informal, and just a bit of fun. But, the photo needs to have been taken this year. Also, if you aren’t currently a contributor to the site, you’ll need to get in touch with me about participating first.

Everything about this capture is great! The expression, the instant in time and the character!
