Well, after shooting with nearly 50 different P&S compacts during these past 4 years, I have come to the conclusion that you should never write a camera off before actually testing it in the field, no matter how mediocre it looks on paper. Many plain-looking cameras have several aces up their sleeve that can neutralize any negative preconceptions and the Sure Shot AF-7/8 is one of them.
