Shadows On-Piste by Harrison Matthew – 35mmc Photo of the year 2025

By Hamish Gill

Just a quick post to announce the “winner” of the photo of the year 2025 – Shadows On-Piste by Harrison Matthew. You can see the original post about the photo here.

I have to say, I am pleased about this – I really like the photo, and the story too! With the photo having been taken somewhat spontaneously with a pocket-sized camera, and turned out to be a favourite amongst photos otherwise taken with a MF film camera on a tripod… well, I just like the story too!

So yeah, there we have it, well done Harrison Matthew, please feel free to get in touch, and as promised I will dig through my box of film for something you might fancy shooting!!

I love this. I was just reading about "notan" as a composition tool. This looks a lot like a notan study.

Thank you for the kind words! Funnily enough some of my closest friends are working illustrators that occasionally teach students, and I'm constantly hearing them pointing out tangents in their own work and in critiques. Perhaps I subconsciously absorbed it through osmosis!

The vastness's is indeed overwhelming in this great photograph. Congrats. A compact XA2 filled with Fomapan400@800 or an CoolpixA900 is therefor always hanging on my right hip. Magic moments don't occur as planned and are gone in an instant.

All too true Reiner, there are weeks where I get so bogged down in work that I'll forget to pack a camera in the car, and without fail there's a moment of perfect afternoon light, a scene I pass, a perfect sunset that I miss, jostling me back into the habit of carrying the RX100 or Rollei 35.

Treasured memories can exist within snaps of a close canine friend just as well as in a striking landscape! Thank you very much for the kind words JA.

Wow, I'm floored and so thankful for all the kind comments!! It's a special kind of company to be among, looking at all the incredible photos that were submitted for the end-of-year roundup. Tremendous cheers to everyone here.

It seems this photo didn't just set the bar high right off the start for my 2025 photography, but also for my website contributions! ha ha Looking forward to both enjoying more articles in 2026, as well as putting together more of my own.

Well done! It goes to show that it’s more important what you see and less so what you hold in your hands.

Bravo Harrison! I love your whole set from that post but agree with you that this frame is a knockout. It feels totally spontaneous but also somehow timeless. I hope you made a print and have it framed somewhere prominent at home. Great job!
