A green rubber frog on a granite rock

Meet Me Mum – One Shot Story

By Dave Powell

Of course, my mother isn’t a rubber frog! But this one may have been her second message to our family when she died. (More about the first one later.)

It did not surprise us that this occurred. Though not Catholic, mom still witnessed or caused enough Biblical-level miracles to qualify for sainthood. The smallest one I experienced occurred when I returned to her house from my 30th high-school reunion with a splitting migraine. She placed her hands on my temples, and the pain instantly vanished. (I’ve often wished I could have bottled that, since I suffered for decades until the beasts faded away.)

But in 2010, her thoracic aorta burst, and she died soon thereafter. I didn’t make it back to Ohio in time to say goodbye in person. But I called her hospice room just before my flight, told her I loved her, and she replied “Well… You’d better!”

That was mom for you. And at least we connected.

One Stormy Black Night

On a night soon after mom’s death, one of my sisters found herself driving slowly home through a lashing black thunderstorm. On a two-lane country road with deep ditches on both sides, she glued her eyes to the tiny patch of asphalt she could see ahead of her car. And the tears she still shed over mom’s departure weren’t helping.

Then, a small green frog hopped across the road in her headlight beams. She stopped, prayed for a sign that mom was doing well in Heaven, and asked God to make that sign another frog.

Days later, she heard that a local garden center was selling its entire inventory for cents on the dollar and closing its doors forever. She dashed over to shop for goodies in its many areas and rooms. But when she entered a final room, the shelves on its walls were crawling with green rubber frogs!

She bought some for herself, our other sister, and me. In the photo, mine is perched on a piece of the granite gravestone under which mom’s, dad’s and my brother’s cremains are buried in our family cemetery.

But Another Message Came First

The instant mom died, I called her twin sister Florence to let her know. She responded cheerfully:

“Oh… I already knew THAT! When we were girls back on the farm, we sat in the same pew every Sunday. It was right up front, to the right of the center aisle. And last night, I dreamt we were girls again, walking arm-in-arm down the same aisle. But when I turned right into our regular pew, she turned left and sat across the aisle. I said, ‘Dorothy, don’t you want to join me like before?’ And she replied, ‘I can’t this time. I’m taking the bus to Canada.’ I just knew she meant Heaven.”

After that, “Taking the bus to Canada” became our family euphemism for “Going to Heaven.”

Shared Death Experiences

Even stranger events occurred when our father died. I’ve learned they are called “Shared Death Experiences.”  Dr. Raymond Moody– the physician who wrote many books about “Near Death Experiences” and who originally coined that term– did the same about some very different events that doctors, nurses, patients, families and friends had also shared with him. They often involved communication with loved ones, and sometimes even witnessing what the dying are experiencing (at least as far as any mortal is allowed).

Aunt Florence apparently received advance notice about mom’s death. And my sister, confirmation of her safe arrival. The rubber frog is also a cute reminder that answers to prayers may well come in humorous ways!

And in this case, I think we can assume that our dearly departed mother is doing EXCEEDINGLY well in Heaven!

My father spoke to me after he died, late one night when I could not get to sleep. He called my name. I was a little spooked; but I had no doubt that it was real.

As always an enjoyable, interesting, challenging and somewhat scary read. Now what is your scientific explanation for these experiences?

Does there have to be a ‘scientific explanation’? Or any explanation?

Sorry about the delay in responding to your comments, Geoff and Ibraar! I wanted to give you informative answers, but it’s taken ten drafts. I haven't set these thoughts to "paper" before, so here goes! ***** Seventy-five miraculous years experiencing all sorts of “paranormal” events may have trained my brain to both accept and continue to experience them. They probably related to my soul’s very reasons for coming here (which could include sharing thoughts like these with you)! ***** Neither agnostic nor atheist, I've still come to believe: (1) That we’ve long had God (and as a result, ourselves) all wrong ("God" being used generically here for the Supreme Being of all religions). (2) That a “simple” change in perspective about God makes many, if not all, paranormal events more understandable (but hardly less mysterious!). (3) That this mental change accepts the possibility that God is actually an incomprehensible, intelligent, self-aware, extremely powerful, physical energy field beyond all spatial, temporal and dimensional constraints. (4) That our universe, and we ourselves, “exist” entirely within this God Field. (5) That what we call our “souls” are nothing less than the God Field itself (a hugely important concept). (6) That we and our souls perceive our separate identities through individualized "Kernels of Awareness" implanted in the God Field. (7) That our bodies are magnificently engineered, biomechanical, quantum-enabled user interfaces through which our “lighter” souls can perceive, navigate and manipulate this “heavy” mortal plane. And (8) That quantum physicists are only just beginning to witness the mysteries of the God Field (and of existence itself) in lab experiments with the quantum "Zero-Point Field" that Leon so rightly mentioned in his comments. ***** Here are just three examples of this: (1) The quantum property of “Entanglement” has become crucial to modern communication systems and computers. Einstein called it “spooky action at a distance,” because two “entangled” particles can instantly respond to each others’ state changes (even if separated by an entire galaxy or universe). It's one reason why some physicists have begun to think that the Zero-Point Field "instantly 'knows' everything that's going on everywhere in the universe." (2) Quantum researchers have performed an even more "God-like" result that would not normally be attributed to human abilities. In September 2019, the journal Nature Physics, described how they caused a 2,000-atom molecule to exist in two places at once! The molecules weren’t copies of each other, but instead, they were 2,000 individual atoms existing in identical molecular arrangements in separate locations. Using the quantum property of “Superposition,” this mind-blowing feat demonstrated that any chunk of matter can exist in two places (and perhaps more). (3) And more recently, quantum researchers are building experiments to see if a predicted “Quantum Retrocausality” can enable future events to affect both the present and the past! This could have ramifications for the idea that our universe is a "Block Universe," where all possible past, present and future events co-exist and where each of our souls might be living multiple mortal experiences (though not "simultaneously" in the usual sense). Understandably, this idea is very controversial. But I wouldn’t bet against it, since most quantum-physics predictions have turned out to be right. ***** As I read about these ever-more-amazing lab results, I increasingly believe that many so-called “paranormal” events are actually information exchanges between souls through the physical God Field. This could explain a huge range of experiences-- including psychic dreams, premonitions, “time slips,” astral projection, clairvoyance, claircognizance, telepresence, psychometry, telepathy, remote viewing, mediumship/channeling, visions, ghosts and even the events described in this article. I believe that my sister's "ask" of God was heard instantly. And that mom's twin sister's dream just before mom died could have been the instant message “goodbye for now!” ***** But how would such communications take place? Well, neuroscientists and quantum physicists have discovered “multi-dimensional physical connections” between our brains and the universe-spanning Zero-Point Field. Called “micro-tubules,” they exist in every cell in our body, but are especially concentrated in brain neurons. They could be the mechanism that “plugs” our physical beings into the quantum Zero-Point Field and all Creation. The implications for our mortal self-images would be staggering! One might even ask the question "Why?" about this physical connection... but that's another conversation altogether. ***** A HUGE "HOWEVER": These ideas are what scientists and mathematicians might all a "theory." I've seen enough confirmation, though, to feel that this theory is also "closer to truth." Beyond the above short summary, it can put many, if not most, "para"-normal experiences into the new category of "scientifically strangely normal." But the theory also predicts and explains why nobody should feel forced to accept it. For if it conflicts with someone's most closely held feelings and beliefs, then the theory probably conflicts with their soul's reasons for being here. And in that case, the theory should be ignored!

That was a long detailed reply and for that I thank you! A lot to digest there. And many themes and ideas which coincide with my own. “We may be in the Universe as dogs and cats are in our libraries, seeing the books and hearing the conversation, but having no inkling of the meaning of it all.” ― William James

Leon on Meet Me Mum – One Shot Story

Comment posted: 05/07/2025

Spot on. For those who want a scientific explanation look no further than some of the latest theories etc from quantum physics and the goings on in the zero point field.

A good read is Professor Robert Temple’s The Science of Heaven. Of course, many in the scientific establishment think of him along with people like Dr Rupert Sheldrake, Greg Braden etc as heretics. As Prof Temple says we are heretics until we are proven right. At that point the naysayers turnaround and say well we knew that all along any way.

The basic problem with the reluctance to accept and understand of what is beyond is being wed to the statement "if we can't measure it, then it doesn't exist". In reality the statement does not hold up to philosophical scrutiny.

It is a philosophical claim that has been debated for centuries. While measurement is a powerful tool in science and everyday life, it is not the sole determinant of existence. Many things exist that we cannot currently measure, and some things may be inherently unmeasurable.

Hi Leon… You are spot-on too! But another problem facing quantum science is that its lab-confirmed predictions are so wildly contrary to everyday intuition that even quantum physicists have trouble believing what they're seeing! So it may be a while before non-scientists are receptive!! ***** Your comment, however, has opened a channel for some things I was including in my replies to Ibraar and Geoff. So I’ll put them here (and significantly shorten the others)! ***** NOTE: SORRY IBRAAR and GEOFF, BUT I’LL POST YOUR REPLIES TOMORROW. YESTERDAY AND TODAY WERE LARGELY FOCUSED ON ADDRESSING THE SIMULTANEOUS FAILURES OF OUR VACUUM CLEANER AND (MORE CRITICALLY) REFRIGERATOR! ***** Thanks too Leon for your book suggestions! Interestingly, for 63 years I avoided reading books about spirituality. But in November, 2011, that began to change. That’s when-- about one year after my mother’s death-- I was taking my morning shower, when I heard her familiar voice say just two words. They sounded Spanish, which puzzled me because she was a farm girl from Ohio who knew only English. When I Googled them phonetically, her words-- “Nosso Lar”-- turned out to be Portuguese for “our home.” I also learned it was the title of a book by Chico Xavier, a Brazilian medium who had “channeled” Andre Luiz (a doctor, who had died and received permission to dictate his post-death experiences for readers back in our realm). A Brazilian film adaptation-- called “Astral City: A Spiritual Journey”-- had also been released near the exact date of my mother’s death. And when I took a long-shot and searched for the film’s DVD in our local library network, it had only one copy. I borrowed it, and realized that mom’s two words were her attempt to tell me what the afterlife was really about. ***** Also around that time, I heard about an intriguing series of three books by Neale Donald Walsch. Titled “Conversations with God,” they claimed to record frank and detailed question/answer sessions with The Creator. And an American movie of the same name describes how Walsch came to write the books. For several years, though, I held off reading his first volume. I first wanted to have my OWN pictures of God and Man pretty much in hand. And I wanted to use them to gauge whether Walsch may have truly talked with God. I think he did. In fact, I have yet to get past the first book. Though penned by a non-spiritual, unemployed, radio DJ living on the streets, its insights were extraordinarily deep (as one might well expect)-- with meanings that only gradually became clear over time. ***** So what does this have to do with your comment, Leon? God’s answers often sounded quantum-physical. For instance, near the end of the first boook, the Great One is quoted as saying: “Thought knows no distance. Thought travels around the world and traverses the universe faster than you can say the word.” Sounds a bit “quantum” to me!

Thanks Dave. I am familiar with some of the references you quote. Great One is quoted as saying: “Thought knows no distance. Thought travels around the world and traverses the universe faster than you can say the word.” If anybody wants some proof then i reccomend watching this short film. https://www.sheldrake.org/videos/jaytee-a-dog-who-knew-when-his-owner-was-coming-home-the-orf-experiment If the link doesn't work the google the sentance below as is. Gosh! I'm so pleased to have started a metaphysical discussion by asking, as one scientist to another, for a scientific explanation. I shall wait patiently for a plausible answer or, failing that, an "I don't know" is acceptable.

Dave, that's a lovely story and I enjoyed the humourous aspect of the frogs' arrival; I have had similar experiences myself, and it's my observation that they are not constrained to our common conceptions of cause/effect and the linear flow of time.

I would be curious to read a scientific explanation but I don't feel the need for one; for me these events are to be appreciated and not necessarily analyzed.

Hi Mark, I think you are quite right about "unconstrained" time. I put a "summary" of my scientific beliefs about the paranormal in one of the above comments. (Just look for the longest text block!) And it mentions something called the "Block Universe." One of the more popular quantum theories about the nature of the "multiverse," it may be a place where time isn't linear, circular or constrained to any other shape because all possible events in all possible times exist equally and simultaneously. What we experience here may just be our individual, unique wanderings through "the Block"! I'm glad you liked the story! Cheers, Dave
