Having seen Hamish’s and David’s posts, in for a penny, in for a pound I thought and decided I’d submit a ‘favourite picture’. To be honest, I don’t have one favourite picture, but many, so it was a case of trying to figure out whether I should post what I think readers would enjoy, or just post whatever floats my boat.
I decided to be selfish about this and post a photo I like, which talks to me and which I am proud of – for my own personal enjoyment, it probably lacks any sort of technical or artistic merits but looking at the title, it is My favourite photo of the year, so here goes.
I spent the first half of the year really enjoying my Zeiss Ikon and Voigtlander cameras more so than anything else, I was also pleased with trying Ilfotec ID11 developer after many many years.
I chose this one, I really like it, because it gives me a feeling of timelessness – a snapshot of an instant, in the ruins of Greyfriars Priory in haunted Dunwich. My favourite bit being the crow perched above the top left window arch..
I spent some time in the digital darkroom making the negative look and feel as I had experienced.
Dunwich was the inspiration for Lovecraft’s famous short story, and If you’re familiar with the Ghost stories of M.R James and if you’ve ever been here, you’ll know what I’m talking about.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I have, you can see the rest of the series of photos at Dunwich in my Icarex review.
Ruins of Greyfriars, Dunwich, Suffolk. Zeiss Ikon Icarex. Carl Zeiss 50mm Tessar f2.8, Ilford Pan F+ 50. Ilfotec ID11. B+W Yellow Filter.
