Ma Baker – Behind the scenes at a local bakery

Where appropriate I’ve been subtly introducing a little bit of film photography in to my working day. In this instance the brief was to capture the hustle and bustle of the behind the scenes action of a small local bakery – Ma Bakers

Owned and run by Sam Barriscale, Ma Bakers is a traditional bakery in Warndon, Worcester. It serves the local community with various breads and rolls as well as sandwiches and pasties and the like. They also provide many of Worcester’s sandwich shops, delicatessens, hotels and restaurants with fresh bread on a daily basis. Duly, they are quite a busy establishment.

For anyone who doesn’t know, my day job is co-owning a creative agency called F8, also based in Worcester. Sam approached us to make him a new website that showed off the bakers as a traditional establishment that makes good quality breads. We were also tasked to take some photos… It seemed only right that the photos should be shot on film.

This was the first of two planned visits, so knowing I had the opportunity to shoot again if anything didn’t quite go to plan, I shot a roll of Portra 400 and a roll of tri-x – the later being a film I’ve never shot before.

The light was fairly low and of course largely made up of strip lights, so not the best conditions. But, I am nonetheless quite pleased with the outcome. The rolls were processed and scanned by UK film lab – I think they did an admirable job!

Shot with the Leica M3, Leica M-A 50mm Summicron, 90mm elmar and Voigtlander 35mm 1.4.
