Riding and shooting the Warriors Race 2002

By Ryan Gardiner Johnson

On Saturday Night August 24, 2002 there was an overnight bike race (fun ride) in New York. The ride was based on the cult film “The Warriors” where NYC gangs travel 30 miles from the Bronx to Coney Island. Riders were invited to make up their own gangs and participate in the ride from the Bronx to Coney Island. Our gang ‘Strangers’ traveled from Boston to NYC to participate…

The ride was an Alleycat race, teams navigated to multiple checkpoints to get their manifest signed. Some of the checkpoints required playing hand ball, getting a tattoo, a Sumo style wrestling event, or just downing a beer. In the spirit of the film there was also a section of the race that required riders to get on the subway with their bikes; a special sight to see hundreds of cyclists on the train with their bikes!

Amazingly more than 700 people from all over the world came and rode through the boroughs, the night and the rain to get to Coney Island for the sunrise. When I originally heard about it, I had no idea that it was going to be as big as it was. I had raced some Alleycats and rides before with 50-75 people, but riding through the New York with 700 people was an experience unlike anything else I have experienced on a bicycle.

Not sure I have a great way to sum it up, other than a big party with lots of people who wanted to ride their bikes, see the city and have fun in a unique way. I’d like to do it again.

All images were shot on a Nikon F90x with a Nikkor 24mm f2.8 on Fuji Superia 800.

Haha, yes, amazing Ryan!
I watched the movie a couple of times when it came out, and listened to the soundtrack basically forever. That combined with my love for bikes and the Nikkor 24/2,8. Perfect post!

Hi Ryan, I think "The Warriors" was my first ever R-rated movie -- I snuck into the theater at age 14 with friends from whatever movie we told our parents we were watching. It made quite an impression on this small-town kid ... I never imagined then I would be spending so much of my life (37 years and counting) in NYC. Your post and the wonderful photos bring back that film and even more so the world of 2002, when I was often on my bike around the city. I love the madcap energy of your photos, some of which look to have been shot "in the saddle." I will definitely have a look at the film. Thanks for sharing your work here.

Always interesting to see a group event before the invasion of the body snatchers i.e. cellphones & selfies. It just feels so much more organic and real. You captured the essence without being bound by the 'limitations' of film. You obviously had experience with film before this event. I really like the group shot of 'The Strangers in Coney Island'. Everyone would have a phone in hand these days. Nice work! Thanks for sharing.

The photographer in the last shot was doing team portraits on his 4x5, he had us (the strangers) lined up and I said 'wait' ran over to a friend, gave him my Camera and he snapped it from next to the 4x5.

If I were to see these shoots today without knowing the year they were shot, I would assume it was 2025. Crazy how so much has changed yet traditions and style and art continue with bits and pieces from the past and modernized. Another reason I love film. Super cool post

Great documentary Ryan. Did you scan prints? or Did you scan negatives and invert? If negatives, what did you invert with?

Thanks for your post!
