NEWS: Lomography Introduces New Discounted LomoChrome Purple 2021 Pétillant Edition

By Molly Kate

If you are looking for an experimental film to get stuck into in 2023, Lomography has released an edition of LomoChrome Purple called Pétillant. The film is discounted due to the potential feature of tiny black dots which may appear on some frames.

The analogue company was in the process of producing the new “2021 formula” for LomoChrome Purple (Pétillant) when they noticed something in the handcrafted batch of film. Tiny black dots showed up on several frames, though not all.

As we all know, film production nowadays is a complicated process and, as our LomoChrome films are handcrafted, sometimes mistakes can happen – despite our best efforts and hard work. We encountered this particular issue during quality control procedures when most of the film material was otherwise almost ready to go.

With the current shortage of film supply worldwide and general waste concerns in mind, it was absolutely out of the question to discard such a perfectly fine millésime! Instead, we have chosen to offer this batch of film at a reduced price. We can’t wait to see how you’ll get creative with it! – Lomography Official Communication

The LomoChrome film range offered by Lomography is full of experimental fun, color shifts, and unpredictability. Purple is especially popular with its magical violet and turquoise/green hues. While acknowledging the tiny black dots were not an intended feature, rather than create unnecessary waste, the company will offer the batch sure to be interesting to photographers that seek the unexpected and the unique.

Reviewing the sample images provided as well as those shared within Lomography’s magazine articles here, the dots do not appear on every image. When they do, they seem to only stick out in light areas of the frame and under close inspection.

At the moment, the film is available in 35mm format on Lomography’s website. With the same specifications as the older LomoChrome Purple formula, the canisters hold 36 exposures but do not have a DX code. The film can be processed in C41 chemistry and is recommended to be shot between 100 and 400 ISO.

Lomography is dedicated to keeping creative film photography alive and thriving and we’re so excited to see that the analogue community continues to innovate and experiment. We foresee an exciting future for the analogue community and we will always be here to challenge your imagination, build on your innovation and keep film photography fun! – Lomography Official Communication

I appreciate Lomography doing this, instead of scrapping the defective film and creating waste. They acknowledge it, but put a positive spin on it with a discount on the price.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Huss! I agree, it's better to have folks shoot it at a discount than to waste it, especially given the supply of color film at the moment.
