A Morning in Snow – My photo of the year 2025

By Curtis Heikkinen

I can’t really pick one particular image as a favorite since I take thousands in a typical year.  But I can say this is a representative example of the kind of image I am most proud of.  It was a bitterly cold February morning when I hiked to the top of a butte overlooking the little town of Dufur, Oregon.  It was windy and snow was falling.  Taking a picture was an adventure in discomfort.  But I loved the images I took, not only because I was pleased with them aesthetically but also because of the effort it took to get them.   Some of my favorite photography outings have occurred in winter, a most under appreciated season.  There is something about a snowy scene that excites me and stirs my creativity.  Then there is the silence that accompanies a fresh snowfall, a profound silence in which the noise that so often intrudes on our existence is removed.  It is so hard to find complete silence in this world.  When I find it, I am perhaps in my most contented state.  I hope in some way this image conveys the silence of that morning.

That's definitely a contender. Some technical details of the photograph would be appreciated please?

I did forget that didn’t I. For those who are interested, a Fugi X-Pro 3 is responsible for the image. Though in recent years I have shot a great deal in film, that day I needed the flexibility of digital not to mention the severe cold made me reluctant to shoot film, though my Leica M3 can withstand cold and snow based on previous experiences.

Beautiful image! Being from Alberta I'm both familiar with snowy adventures and barbed wire fences. I love how your image captures the elements of a snow fall, the quiet nature of the environment and the sweeping openness of the country side.

Fabulous image! You wouldn't get me out there now - I'm sitting by the fire with mulled wine in my glass.

A photograph that stopped in my tracks when it popped into my Inbox.
It's fascinating how an image so quiet can leave such an impact. Thank you for the moment of quiet, Curtis. I can't resist a snowy scene either.
