Presale has opened for WideluxX™, a limited, German-made revival of the classic Widelux swing lens panoramic camera.
Jeff Bridges, who in our circles has possibly become as known for his photography as he is for his film career, has spent decades shooting with the original Widelux on movie sets. That long standing personal connection turned into something bigger when he teamed up with his wife, Susan Bridges, along with Marwan El Mozayen and Charys Schuler of Silvergrain Classics. Together, they founded SilverBridges with the goal of redeveloping the Widelux.
This new WideluxX (extra x) version of the camera still works in the same way. A rotating lens sweeps across the scene to create a panoramic image on 35mm film over a single continuous exposure. Instead of everything being captured at once, the frame is recorded across the frame over the period of exposure which makes for a more extreme panoramic effect, as well as sometimes making for interesting movement effects.
The WideluxX is to be made in Germany as a fully mechanical camera, with modern materials and manufacturing processes. The first run is limited to 350 cameras, priced at €5,200 in Germany including VAT. Orders are paid upfront, each camera is prepared individually, and delivery is expected in about six to eight months, with refunds available if that stretches past a year.
