sunflowers with a sunflare taken on film with a plastic camera

Sunflares and Sunflowers – My favorite photo of 2025.

By DeeDee Yelverton

Summers where I live range from hot, to very hot, to blistering hot. Thankfully, this year’s summer was only hot. That meant I was outside more often, which I love.

I took this photo during one of those hot summer days while on an afternoon walk. This house always makes me smile in the summer, and I pass it as often as I can when I’m out and about. I’ve been doing this for a lot of summers now. The sunflowers are colorful and tall (most taller than I am), and each year there are more of them. The owner even set out some chairs for people to sit in and enjoy the moment – or mostly for the high school seniors to take selfies.

I used my favorite plastic camera, the Superheadz White Slim Angel, for this shot. It has a delightful flare when shooting into the sun, and I purposefully aimed it toward the sun to capture that sunflare over the sunflowers in this scene. Now that the days are cooler and often less sunny, I especially enjoy looking back at this scene. I can almost feel the warmth of summer again – or at least know that it will be back soon.

Thanks to Hamish and all of the “best of 2025” contributors so far! I’m really enjoying seeing everyone’s favorite images for the year, and reading the stories behind each one.

You can find more of my photos on Flickr and occasionally on Instagram, as well as my website.

About The Author

By DeeDee Yelverton
My interest in photography began when I was around 9 or 10 years old. I was fascinated with photography as a way to capture and preserve a feeling and a moment forever - to me it was the closest thing we had to time travel. I still feel the same way about it.

Lovely shot! As I recently returned to shooting film after a 20 year detour to digital I'm still often amazed by how magical images can be especially from old and/or inexpensive cameras and lenses. I'm reminded by the story my friend in college during the mid 90's where he submitted a photo he took with a disposable camera instead of his Hassleblad system and won the photo contest!

Hi Deedee!
Great shot! I love the framing, the use of light, and the composition that draws me into the image and makes me want to know more about that street and those houses. It feels a little like a summer day with nothing to do back in the time of my life when we didn't have screen devices and we could navigate our boredom ourselves and come up with something to do, including trying out cameras like the old hand me down half frame Mercury from the 1950's that my dad gave me one year for my birthday.
