I can’t really pick one particular image as a favorite since I take thousands in a typical year. But I can say this is a representative example of the kind of image I am most proud of. It was a bitterly cold February morning when I hiked to the top of a butte overlooking the little town of Dufur, Oregon. It was windy and snow was falling. Taking a picture was an adventure in discomfort. But I loved the images I took, not only because I was pleased with them aesthetically but also because of the effort it took to get them. Some of my favorite photography outings have occurred in winter, a most under appreciated season. There is something about a snowy scene that excites me and stirs my creativity. Then there is the silence that accompanies a fresh snowfall, a profound silence in which the noise that so often intrudes on our existence is removed. It is so hard to find complete silence in this world. When I find it, I am perhaps in my most contented state. I hope in some way this image conveys the silence of that morning.
