A Question of Scale – My Favourite Photo of 2026

By David Hume

This is my favourite photograph of the year.

It’s not my best photo – it’s my favourite.

The reason this is my favourite is because it shows what I’m playing with at the moment and It’s making me look forward to what comes next. That is a really important thing for me; an excitement I have about making new work and seeing where it might lead. It’s the most important thing actually, because good new work comes from this ongoing process of experimentation and discovery.

I’m a visual artist who uses photography as a medium. I’m excited by photography’s capacities and its relationship to other art forms. I’m interested in how photography can express ideas in ways that other media cannot. What you see above is not finished work, it’s more like a visual diary entry and I look forward to revisiting this over the coming months.

This is something I made a couple of Saturdays ago when after a few busy family days I had some quiet time to myself. Obviously it is a photograph of a spoon placed next to a of a photograph of that same spoon. It’s a life-sized print; one-to-one scale. It’s a thermal print; the same cheap kind of print you get as a receipt at the supermarket.

There’s a long and convoluted  rationale for all this and lots of other stuff going on as well; but that needs to stay in my own head. The final work needs to speak for itself without explanation. What I need to do now is develop the form this work will eventually take, and find a way to make something visually engaging that invites a viewer to share these ideas. Anyway, to me that will be a great adventure and it’s why this little manifestation of that adventure is my favourite photo of the year.

Best wishes to all the 35mmc community in their own voyages of discovery!

David,
I love this photograph. It speaks volumes to me as an artist and a filmmaker. It’s postmodern attitude is gorgeous and defiant and, I think, the surrealists would be proud. (And by surrealists, I specifically mean Magritte. Although I think you already know this.) A great choice for 2026!

What a great idea, David! Do you have one of those thermal printers? Or did you take your USB stick to a (very accommodating) super market? :-)
Cheers,
Erik
