Basilica de Covadonga

One Shot in Covadonga

By Fidel

This shot was taken on a trip to Spain over the summer. Didn’t really fit with the series I posted last. Its one of those places you visit because of its historical significance. Supposedly Spain’s reconquest from Muslim rule started here back in the 700’s.

It was a foggy, drizzling morning at sunrise, it always drizzles there. Took a few shots of the basilica head on, they were ok I thought. Packed it up, walked back downhill to my car and put my bag away. As I closed the door and turned around, I saw the stairs. Had to take it all out again for this shot. Happy I did, Its one of my favorites from the trip.

Shot was taken on Ilford HP5 with a Chamonix 45F-2 and a Nikkor 150mm f5.6.

Nice! Great mood from the clouds and the stairs leading into them.

It is truly a one shot story. The composition is compelling and the architecture is the kind of timeless thing made for beauty and majesty. This is why I like the square frame; everything is perfectly balanced and proportioned if you do it right.

Thank you Russ! Although, it's 4x5. I really never do good with square! Go figure .

I was logging into 35mmc to get some old blog text through my dashboard when this image virtually jumped off the page. Stunning.

. . . And while using “Transform” in Lightroom allows one to straighten out some lens distortion when shooting buildings, I seriously doubt that any software solution could achieve such perfect lines that your view camera has provided you here.

This is a gorgeous shot, Fidel! The combination of the fog, staircase with that amazing curve and the church is just breathtaking. Although I have a 4x5 I seldom use it. Do you recall if you had to use movements to keep everything in focus? From the what I see everything across the frame, near or far, is perfectly sharp.

Thank you David. I did use some front tilt to increase the dof, Scheimpflug thingie, had to look up the spelling on that one. Thats all, no prospective change, everything was pretty parallel. Some great portraits on your recent post btw!

lol I've never attempted to write let alone speak that word! Would love it if one of our German colleagues here would pronounce it for us!

I love the way in which the juxtaposition of all the elements in the composition combine to depict an almost Escher-esque stairway to heaven. Which in a way I suppose it is.
A superb image, Fidel.
