VIDEO: A Conversation with Eric Woods – The madness in the world, community, hobbies and interests as distractions

By Hamish Gill

I have for a while now been meaning to find a way to restart having chats with photographers I have become friends with through the website. I loved making the occasional videos I used to make, but just never find the time or resource to make them. I was also somewhat limited to chatting to people who lived somewhere within a few hours drive. It recently occurred to me that I could probably get over both these limitations by just capturing a video call… so that’s exactly what I have done here.

Eric is someone I’ve been chatting with for probably a few years now. We have never met or even chatted face to face before this conversation, to date it has just been via email and mostly – though not exclusively – about recent camera purchases, thoughts about the craziness of a lot of the digital camera community… and well, frankly goading each other into buying more cameras.

Recently we have both realised that we are pretty happy with the kit we have. This seemed like quite a big deal so I thought we should have a chat about it via video. I asked Eric and he kindly agreed. Of course, in the end, we ended up chatting about a lot more.

I have titled the video ‘A Conversation with Eric Woods – The madness in the world, community, hobbies and interests as distractions… and a bit about photography and cameras’… I’ll let you be the judge as to whether or not that covers it all!

Be warned, we do touch a little on politics….
Else, I hope you enjoy what turned out to be a bit of a rambling conversation!

Really enjoyed this chat! Great seeing Eric and his bassy voice was a pleasure to listen to!
You know, I've never had a conversation with a photographer in person before, all I've ever came across have been firmly wedged up their own arses and love blowing their own trumpet - it's the same with Musicians - so I always tend to cease any talk immediately by saying I just photograph crap with shitty cameras. So it was a pleasant surprise to listen to two cool down to earth brothers!

Well… careful what you wish for. I have messaged a few other people today asking if they’d be up for it… … but you’re top of the list!

Hahahah!!! Your readership will be halved and I’ll never be permitted to post here ever again! I’ll be like an outcast leper in the photography related World Wide Web But sounds somewhat appealing!!

You're welcome my friend. I'd very much like to hear you again with another Hamish pod/video cast! Was a satisfying listen, for those who haven't, as there was a lot more than just photography

This is really bringing this community even closer; a great idea and a good display of what means to belong to a group. Talking about various subjects, sharing thoughts and touching on aspects that we seldom see in our articles about photography...all these make great moments. And when live, this makes it even better.

Great stuff, Hamish and Eric, thank you !!

I just like to comment on the flags everywhere problem. The writer and journalist Kurt Tucholsky said: The more flags are up, the more the sight is blocked.

Really enjoyed this - glad you are bringing it back Hamish!

Related to the bokeh discussion - there seems to be a "separation obsession" in some circles, that I suspect is highly lens-manufacture marketing driven. I agree with you two - give me some context, and therefore more content!

However, interestingly, three of us have written here about the same physical copy of the smoothest blur lens ever, the Minolta/Sony STF - is there any other copy of a lens that has happened with on 35mmc? In chronological order:

I almost want to start a podcast just to have conversations like this, that are as much about life as they are about photography. Sure, you can nerd out on the photography stuff for the whole hour, but the connections really get made when you talk about life stuff, like Eric's work with the voice coach.

As someone who has lived in Japan part-time for the past 20 years, and full-time during covid, the internet - particularly special interest groups, primarily photography - has been a way of communicating to English speakers and maintaining contact with the western world. For all its faults the internet has been a "lifesaver" for many people. Perhaps even for those who need a daily rant in order to remain stable in their normal lives. Thank you 35mmc and Hamish in particular.
PS: I'm looking forward to the interview with bad boy Ibraar ;-)
