5 Frames with a Nikon F65 – an old photographic friend

By Cem Eren

Nikon F65 is… No, that’s not exactly what I will be talking about in this post. Nikon F65 is my first SLR, and was equipped with a 28-80 Nikkor lens when I bought it brand new in 2001.

I got married in 2001 and my honeymoon destination was Rome. A friend of mine had booked a nice hotel for us near Ponte Sisto. This was our first trip abroad together. While we were doing all the touristic itineraries, I was filming with a handy cam, a Hi-8 from Sony. That handy cam is still active today though sitting in a cabinet at home.

I don’t remember the exact day but probably on the third day of our visit, while walking back to the hotel, I noticed the F65 in the display of a specialty shop, announcing a promotion too. I did not step into the shop and just passed by, but I was feeling the poison in my veins.

After reaching to the hotel, I told my wife to rest, and I headed back to the shop. It was impossible for a consumer to check the prices and compare them on the spot in those days. If you were in a sort of specialty mall then you might be able to discern a value by visiting competing shops. I wasn’t, but I felt that the offer was sensible. After half an hour, I was back to the hotel with my new toy and couple of rolls of film in my pocket.

I used the F65 for 7 years as a travel companion and for other photographic adventures until I picked up a compact digital. Since 2010, I have invested more on Nikon lenses, building a variety of primes as well as DSLR bodies. I finally settled on a Df. I have not bought any digital cameras since then. Although I continued to shoot on film, my almost new old stock Nikon FE has become the prima donna. The F65 has since served a friend of mine for almost a year who wanted to learn analogue photography. Since then, it has come back to me. I cleaned it and noticed that the edges of the front surface have become a bit sticky. I managed to get that sticky surface peeled a bit without too much destruction.

I recently bought the batteries and loaded a roll of Fujifilm C200 and then waited for a photographic excursion to somewhere to shoot the roll. In the end, I had the time to visit a nearby Black Sea village, planning to shoot by the sea during this off season. The old friend performed flawlessly attached a 50mm Nikkor AF-D 1.8. I am sharing the selected 5 photos out of this short photo-walk. Yes, I walked, those tire tracks in the third photograph are not mine. The negatives have been processed and scanned by a reputable lab.

I can see why that camera is an old friend. Nice shots with natural colours and character.

Nice sharp photos with good color. That resort area looks peaceful!

I have that camera and all the rubber parts are very sticky. I've tried various cleaners without success. What worked for you?
Thanks for sharing. Jeffery

Beautiful shots Cem! I just acquired my first Nikon ever (in 50 years of shooting). It had a Nikon E-series 36-72/3.5 that fell apart when I was unboxing. As it turned out I was pointed to a great site by a guy named Richard Haw who had a detailed set of repair instructions for the lens. I have no idea yet how the lens is going to perform and with your Nikkor lens experience I wonder what lens you'd say "rules them all"? I understand that the Nikon E-series was an attempt to create a "beginners series" that wasn't as expensive as the Nikkor lenses.

Thank you Gary. I recommend not to invest too much on that lens. If you are okay with manual focus lenses and if you can find one, 50mm AI-S 1.8 pancake lens is very good. If you want auto-focus support, prime AF-D lenses like 35mm f2, 50mm 1.8 are good options. I have also 50mm f1.4 but I do not think it is worth to pay extra for that. If you need a zoom lens, 28-105 AF-D produce good results as well. I use 50mm AI-S 1.8 with my Nikon FE as autofocus is not supported by the camera and slim lens with good optics is very practical.

Hi Crm,
Here in the US, I think Nikon assigned a different model designation. But I bought one in 2004 four our daughter as she entered art school. It came back to me when she graduated. I put it away for her, but she had no more use for it. We were having a neighborhood boot/tag sale and a young girl came by w/her dad. Guess what? She was heading to the same art college our daughter attended in Boston. I didn’t have the heart to sell it to her; we gifted it to her. That was about 6 years ago.

The Fujifilm has rendered lovely natural looking colours Cem. I have a Nikon F501 I have enjoyed using even though the autofocus motor doesn't work. There is also an F50 in the collection, complete with the sticky surfaces you described. I think the F50 must be similar to the F65, perhaps a little earlier. I can't get it working but that may be down to lens incompatibility. It came from a friend clearing out her father's old camera gear. I think it got separated from the original lens it came with at some point. I read there weren't many lenses that were compatible with this model and it does seem to be a lens error on the display. I haven't put much effort into it as even a working F50 seems to be almost worthless. Looking at your lovely images, I might revisit this as a project.

Hi Paul, thank you. It is highly likely that F50 and F65 have similar specs. If you attach any CPU lens other than G type, you need to set the aperture ring to the biggest F number otherwise the camera will display fEE error. The aperture can only be controlled via the dial on the body. Non-cpu lenses can only be used in M mode if I am not mistaken.
