NEWS: NONS Camera Releases Instant Back for Hasselblad using Fujifilm Instax Square Film

By Molly Kate

New from NONS Camera is an Instant Back that fits on Hasselblad 500, 501, and 503 series cameras. The Instant Back takes Fujifilm Instax Square film and allows you to shoot the Hasselblad as usual without making any adjustments to the viewfinder or focusing screen.

The Instant Back adopts much of the design features that you’ll see in NONS’s instant camera lineup. It’s powered by a 2040 mAh Li-ion battery chargeable through a USB-C port. A small display on top of the device shows users the film counter alongside the battery status.

Instead of ejecting the film automatically, it’s up to the user to decide when to engage the electric motor with the press of a button. This allows for multiple exposures on one piece of film and greater creative possibilities.

A darkslide is included with the Instant Square Back to protect loaded film while attached to a camera, but NONS says it will only temporarily protect from light leaks if unattached. If removing the instant back from the camera with loaded film, they recommend placing it in a light-tight container as quickly as possible.

NONS Camera have published a Youtube video demonstrating how the Instant Back operates. Check it out here:

At the moment, the Instax Square Film Back is available for pre-order priced at $259 USD or $279 USD without the initial discount. It incldues a 1-year warranty and is estimated to start shipping in September 2023. While the company has confirmed compatibility with the 500, 501, 503 series cameras, they don’t guarantee it will fit other Hasselblad models. In case you don't know, Polaroid backs were essential in MF photography back in the day as they were used for image previews to check for lighting, exposure and compositions and many of those "test shots" were actually great alternatives as keepsakes for the model or whoever.

well, you can also use a pinhole lens cap on a Hasselblad, so why not?

This seems interesting! Their website says full focus and no change to screen - so it presumably they've got the film plane the same. I've been looking for something like this for a while...

Had considered a Polaroid back and the Vinstax back but did not go a head for varying reasons. Was intrigued by the NONS SL660 so after reading this post and a bit more research I decided to pre-order one of these and give it a try. Have a great day.

Looks interesting to me. I enjoyed the old peel apart instant back with my 500CM whilst the Fuji 100 film was available, although the small image square on the large instant real-estate looked odd back then.

If it can produce sharp images I'd be very keen to get one. Price looks ok. It's a shame it looks unwieldy compared to the sleek look of the Hassleblad, but hopefully future versions will improve this. I hope Fujifilm release a 200 (say) version of the current Instax film, the narrow lattitude and 800ASA is a bit rubbish.

Good on Mint and Nons for continuing to develop niche Instant cameras.
