Photos of the year 2025 – Pick Your Favourite!

By Hamish Gill

As promised, here is a post containing a recap of everyone’s photos of the year, 2025. I am going to make this pretty informal, but I like the idea of it being a little bit of a competition. If you want to vote for a favourite, or a few favourites if you like, just comment their name/s below and after a few days I will tot up the votes, and send whoever the winner is a few rolls of film. I am even including my own photo in this too – that’s how informal I am going with this – it really is just for fun!

One thing I have realised putting all these together without their corresponding stories is how interesting it is seeing them without the words… that was sort of the message of my post, but it has made me reflect on all of them differently thinking about them independently of what people have had to say about them. I suppose what I am saying here is that if any take your eye, please do click through to the original posts to read more!

So, first off, the guy who kicked this whole thing off with his photo, David Pauley – you can see the original post here.

I am in the same mind as many above. There are too many to really decide on one. But if I had to I would say Art Meripol and David Pauley graphically describe to me what America is going through today and what it used to represent. Others I would choose because I could bear to have them on my wall and see them every day. Julian Tannase, Eric Bremmer, Harrison Matthew and Peter Roberts Lowryesque image in this group. But it's kid in a candy store really. Great collection.

Yes. I totally agree Neal. 8"x12" or a little bigger on Hahnemühle Photo rag 308 or German Etching with an art border and signature! Maybe also try Epson Velvet Fine Art. I think the muted blacks and slight surface texture of the German Etching and Velvet Fine Art would go nicely with the fence posts and snow.

As others have said, this was a great idea, and thanks Hamish for running it! I had decided early on to hold off reading the individual submissions [ except mine, of course! ] so that I could impartially view the final images. Then to pick, I scanned this list without attending to who submitted them. They are ALL great images, and this is the list (in published order) of the nine that I reacted to most strongly as I scrolled along [with short comments]:

* Geoff Chaplin – Life and death in London [Ansel Adams had trouble getting people to exhibit and buy his street candids (they weren't landscapes, you see). But he wouldn't have had if they'd been THIS good!]
* Harrison Matthew – Shadows On-Piste [Wouldn't mind a big print of THAT on my wall.]
* Max Tiraquon – Graveyard [An unusually gorgeous graveyard IR... and another wall candidate!]
[... NOPE... Can't choose yourself, Dave! ...]
* Omar Tibi – Towers [Beautiful, moody, monochrome architecture.]
* Rollin Banderob – A Warm Summer Night [A great, great "alley" shot that even FEELS right!]
* Ibraar Hussain – The Haunting of Sheda Jatt of Village Gehal Bala [Beautifully composed, with experience ETCHED in her brow. (Also, my wife's favorite image!)]
* Richard Becker – A Picture in Spring [A lovely experiment gone right.]
* Eric Rose – Harvest Moon [I agree with others... Ansel would be impressed: "Bleach... Who knew?"]
* Andy Hertig – Photo Laundry [A perfect subject with great humor!]

For me it would be Peter Roberts's photo. I love the tension it creates of people walking in the street but we have no idea where they are going or why or even which way the are facing. The long shadows create a perspective and add more tension.
