When I bought this 1933 Summar 50mm f2.0 I shot some test photographs on my Leica M240 and got pretty good results so long as I avoided pointing anywhere near the sun. I had high hopes when I attached the Summar to my Leica IIIf loaded with Kentmere Pan 200 on a bright, sunny, April morning and took it with me on Dog Walk Number 2 (there are 3, daily). I tucked my Leica IIIf, lens collapsed, into my coat pocket and set off with my moderately excited German Shepherd.
I spotted this lovely old Triumph motorcycle parked in front of a row of cottages gleaming in the sunshine. I was near the end of the roll and wanted to use it up so that I could develop it. The sun was behind me. I stopped and so did my dog; I’ve trained her to wait whilst I take photographs. I metered, focused and took a frame overexposed 1 stop.
I got home and processed the film and let it dry. The next day I scanned the film and got a look at the results. I liked the flare from the reflected light on the motorbike frame and it shows off Kentmere Pan 200’s modest halation and grain. The lens is not coated, so I’ve had to tweak the contrast in Lightroom.
The rest of the shots that I took that morning were soft and several suffered from flare. I was disappointed but I got this one good one. I’m still trying to decide if I should get this lens CLAd or just leave it on the shelf.
