Polishing a Turd Trying To Save It in the Edit

By Max Tiraquon

What could I possibly encounter in a graveyard that would require use of a “Tough” camera ghosts’n goblins, of course not I went during the daytime so just be some crackheads then. Well that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but some of these cemeteries are in rougher parts of town and I had never been to this place before.

This was only a scouting mission so I just wanted something cheap and janky to document any compositions I may find, the weather was also looking like it would be pants.

The original intention for purchasing this camera was to have a small, fully weather sealed camera that I could take out in terrible weather without worry. For that purpose it works fine, upon testing it after purchasing (for about £20) I turned it on and put it straight under a running tap no problems.

The Tough 6010 is a 12 megapixel 28-102mm from 2009 that’s water, freeze and drop proof. Reviews from back then are middling with regard to image quality, I was not impressed with the results I got out of camera. The camera uses the Olympus and Fujifilm developed xD-Picture Card for storage luckily mine came with a micro sd adapter as the xD-Picture Cards are quite expense for the amount of storage you get. More features of the camera include picture modes disappointingly no black and white, art filters and a double tap functions for different settings, none of which I use. Good news it has a live histogram and exposure compensation as there are no manual controls.

I was not impressed with the image quality or my compositional skills but there was one composition which I thought had potential so I used the old cliché of turning them into black and white. I decided to process the jpeg inside my go to B&W converter Googles free version of Nik Collection Silver Efex Pro 2. I have very much taken an infrared inspired approach to editing these with a green filter emulation and the soft contrast slider turned to 11 some have also been double processed because maxing out a slider once was just not enough. You will have to let me know if you think I have over done it. The first image below is my favourite and I will be returning with my infrared camera. My favourite I will return to shoot with my infrared camera

I initially thought that the bright red "camera" in your header shot was a container of antiperspirant. With that out of the way (our Tough camera isn't that color red).

Your shots look great Max! Why did you entitle your article "Polishing a Turd...."

I like the look of these images. Maybe infrared will be fun to try on these scenes but I bet you'll be hard pressed to do better.

Thanks Karen

Hi Karen, I'm using Windows after a quick Google it seams this old version of the Nik Collection may have some problems running on newer versions of MacOS. There is the updated software now run by DxO but that has a cost implications.

Cool Max - it made me smile. I have a TG 370 sitting on my desk; an op-shop find that has SD card and 14MP but the body looks the same, so I guess it's a tad younger, but I've not shot it.

To your shots - I think they look nice, and what you've done is a good choice. If you wanted a critique I'd say that the softness and green filter works, but as a set they are inconsistent in black and white points.

I think you could go in a bit harder in bringing the blacks down, and keep an eye on how much you let the whites blow out. I think the easiest way of doing this is by playing with the end points of the tone curve rather than a slider. If you can't do that in your software, then keep an eye on the histogram while you play with the sliders.

Cheers

The pictures are nice and I like the faux-IR treatment. But man, someone needs a copy editor.

I agree English is not my strong suit, always thought I had undiagnosed dyslexia as a child. I'm retired now but luckily my job only really involved numbers I used to work in accounts for Enron. Joking aside if anyone one reads this and they are a contributor to 35mmc and would like to proof read and maybe jazz up any article I write please contact me by email from the dashboard it would only be one or two articles a year, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Max,
Those shots are nice! Very Steven King-ish. Was it misty/foggy, or was that the processing? They look good at cell phone size, but you probably need more to work with for bigger images. Please post again after you do a reshoot.
