My favourite photo of 2026 – isn’t even about photography

By Geoff Chaplin

I just went to watch the sunset from the local viewpoint, grabbing my bag (with camera) as a matter of course.

It was a beautiful calm evening, cooling after the heat of the day, and there was hardly a sound to be heard. The sky too was virtually empty of pattern, no clouds, no moon or stars, and the sun had just set. There are many beautiful sunsets where I live but rarely so peaceful in every way. And the mood of the surroundings transferred to my personal inner space.

Before leaving it occurred to me to capture some images, primarily the empty sky.

This visit wasn’t about photography, but now looking at the image it instantly reminds me of those few moments in time, the surrounding peace, and the internal peace it inspired.

This is so much about photography.

Geoff,

This breathtakingly beautiful image has that rare ability to transcend the dogmatic rigors of the photographic process. You get a sense that somehow, it simply just “appeared.” It’s how I feel when people look at Adams’ landscapes. A gorgeous photograph to represent your 2026. Cheers!
