Monkichi Toy Camera – Heisei Retro Trending

By Thao Ha

This is my first ever post here. I want to make a series about fun toy cameras that I’ve collected since coming to Tokyo. A bit about myself: I am a film photography beginner that moved to Tokyo for University. As I spent my first year here, I realized Japan have a very vibrant scene for fun vintage toy film camera, and as a collector of whimsy little joys, I’ve dedicated a small collection on my shelf for fun toy cameras that I could find. This is my first entry in the series, the first camera that started this journey–my Monkichi camera. Monkichi is a Sanrio character that was created during the Heisei era of Japan and is also my favorite character from Sanrio. The camera got to my me via one time i attended a flea market near my place, it was truly a great find as I was able to get this 90s’ camera in great condition for only about 1000yen. After testing it at home, I was delighted to find that not only does the shutter still works but also the flash after I put a AAA battery in. With that, I took him out to the street.

My family was visiting me for summer here and we decided to go to Tokyo Disney Sea, and I of course brought my new friend along. It was a bit chaotic at first, learning what this camera can do, it’s a point and shoot with plastic lens and manual winding film mechanism. Taking consistent pictures was a bit hard, and many of my pictures are blurry since there is no auto focus, but I would argue that there is a charm to it and I actually enjoyed it imensely. It’s kind of like a lottery, waiting until I could get the film developed and see which picture is a keep and which is not. Under here are pictures that I deemed are worth keeping. All the photos are shot on Kodak color plus.

This was a super fun experience, bringing this little guy along to take random photos as I go. Of course this camera is no professional grade or anything but I found it enjoyable trying to work with this gem to produce okay-ish photos. I still have many more fun toy cameras that I plan to also write about in the near future, please look forward to them! Thank you so much for stopping by to read ☆*:.。. o(≧▽≦)o .。.:*☆
