5 Frames with a Cameradrama

By Sneakerzoom

For a little roadtrip recently, I dusted off an old piece of kit I had lying around still. I thought I had gotten rid of it already, but it appeared stubbornly in a box in the study while I was rummaging around in there, unphazed and untouched, for what I’m sure has been some years now. It looked kind of sad, almost like it was calling out to me “Take me with, I am a good camera, there is still use for me!”. Well alright then. And so I took this cameradrama of a Yashica 230AF, loaded some expired Kodak UltraMax 400, and set out for Paris. Paris, Ontario, that is.

And a drama it was, as this piece of 1980’s technology couldn’t make up it’s mind on whether it was on or off. Not according to the magnificent LCD screen on top at least, which by the looks of it had a refresh rate (read indicisiveness rate) of 65 million Herz. The shutter button required less pressure than my Olympus XA, and that one goes off just by looking at it. The auto-focus system was so slow I could have easily driven to actual Paris before it decided ‘yoohoo, I have locked onto something’ and some dusty circuitery inside begrudgingly told the mirror to lift up.  Yet, once all was said and done, it chirped out some rather decent imagery. The lens is surprisingly sharp and the el cheapo film, in this situation, just worked. Aside from me opening up the camera too eagerly and flaring a few frames, it produced 30+ useable images.

Wait, is that a submarine?

Not a bad result for an expired camera with expired film.

Palm trees, in Ontario.

These pictures were taken whilst driving around from Paris via a few other towns to Port Dover, Ontario. And yes, you saw that right, that was indeed a submarine parked in someone’s backyard.
