A picture of a Kiev 3 film camera

5 Frames With a Fed 3 Type-1 B

By Michael Zwicky-Ross

This is not going to be an in-depth review of the Fed 3, I’m sure you have all read one before. This one came from the usual auction site complete with an Industar 52mm f2.8 lens for £37.77 plus postage which seemed very reasonable. I have to confess here that I was motivated by Hamish’s column on shooting his Fed 2 and it was only after clicking Buy Now that I realised I’d accidently bought a Fed 3. So be it. It seemed very clean and the lens looked perfect apart from the focusing being a little stiff. When I sighted on my favorite telegraph pole on the opposite side of the next field I saw that the infinity focus was way off. A quick adjustment of the rangefinder optic and the little screw behind the dummy next to the viewfinder and all was well. Thank you The Internet.

The following pictures were all taken at 1/125s and either f8 or f11 depending on how bright it seemed on Kosmo Foto Agent Shadow 400iso from Hamish’s mate Steve, which seemed appropriate. They were home developed in R09 and scanned in a Canon 9000F. And then straightened. As has been said, the Fed viewfinder is terrible, especially for spectacle-wearers.

A pie-bald horse looking over a 5-bar gatepennington churchI’m not unhappy with the reel and the experience of shooting a camera from 1962 but I think I’m done now so it can go back on the auction site for someone else to enjoy.

Wow, that was brief I have one of these and yes, you are right about the viewfinder. It has a knurled face that really rips into lens glass. The images you took are great, (is agent shadow Kentmere 400?). The camera itself is a really good introduction to rangefinders and film photography. Mine has been replaced by Canons and other good stuff but you have inspired me to dig it out and give it a roll.

Well, I'm glad I have inspired you! Short and sweet you might say. I do have a longer review of a different camera on the way which is perhaps less well known. As to the film-stock I think it was a multi-roll pack from Kickstarter but I have no idea who made it. One of those impulse buys.

Michael,
Very nice shots! I've thought about selling lots of seldom used cameras, and gone through it with many. Including a Leica IIIf. But I can't seem to part with the Fed3. Mine is a well working relic from a guy that brought it to the US from Ukraine. He was the grandfather of one my high school students. I also bought Mocva V from him.
Before you sell it, put a red dot on it and set it in a visible place on your shelf. Address it as 'Leica' whenever you speak to it. You'll find it to rise in (perceived) value!

Thank you Jeffery. They were just things seen on my daily walk that I take for granted. I probably won't actually sell it on as I enjoyed the totally manual operation. What I need to do is follow an internet guide to servicing the lens as the focusing is really unacceptably stiff.

Nice shots though - I love my FED 3 and the other Soviet cameras I’ve picked up over the years - a small rubber o ring glued to that viewfinder will do the trick - or a little diopter should also work. When you get one that is well put together they work so well. Thanks for the review.

Thank you for the suggestion Michael, and the kind comments. I did think I was going to scratch my spectacles every time I put my eye to the viewfinder so I might try that. Obviously I'm not actually going to sell it, I'm not that organised!
