Election Day 2015 – The final push of the Worcester Labour Party

By Hamish Gill

Today – Election Day 2015 – I followed Joy Squires, Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Worcester around for a large portion of the day. The idea was to document an election day from the perspective of a candidate and her team as they try to squeeze every last vote of the supportive local electorate.

I shot the day with Ben’s M2, a 35 and 50mm Summicron, and despite what the photos look like, Portra 400. Unfortunately, such is sods law on such a momentous occasion, the inexpensive high street D&P did something wrong and the colour came out quite wrong. Slightly frustrated I decided I would convert them to black and white, and thankfully, I am more pleased with them this way. Funnily enough, I’d actually loaded a roll of XP2 to start with, but at the 11th hour unloaded it in favour of a roll of Portra. I wasn’t sure whether or not I had made the right choice all day, so in the end having my hand forced was perhaps a bit of serendipity.

Anyway, I hope the content of the photos tells the story as I shall just introduce Joy – here she is, doing some last minute canvasing in one of Worcester’s few tower blocks.

If you’re in the UK, I do hope you voted!

They work well in black and white I think! Nicely done. Not so much a fan of the election results though. :(

Well done Hamish. These capture the day perfectly. A combination of weariness and energy, planning and confusion, tea-making and doorknocking.
