Thank you for the support – it has meant a lot! (and a quick question)

By Hamish Gill

The other day I posted about my ongoing advert provider woes and the impending change of supplier that was beginning to make me nervous. I really wasn’t expecting the level of support and positivity I received – it really did mean a lot!

I am now feeling a little more comfortable. I received a few one off donations that I hadn’t expected, and those have about covered 2/3rds of the quote I have had from the techy guys, which is great. I also gained quite a few paid subscribers, which although being a small amount of cash, do make a difference!

So yes, mostly because I haven’t been able to thank everyone individually, I just wanted to say thank you very much! It really does mean a lot!!

The one question I had though – a couple of people suggested I should come up with a second high subscription option. I have never thought of this, but my gut reaction was to make it a pay-as-you-feel thing so people can subscribe with an amount they they would like rather than me prescribing it. Annoyingly, as you will read here, the system I use doesn’t allow this, and in fact only offers a really clunky work around. I can implement this, but if I do, does any one have any sensible suggestions for amounts I should offer? To be honest, this makes me feel all a little uncomfortable, but I am encouraged by the comments to do more here, and now have a dream where I can offer a site with a lot less ads to everyone.

Any further thoughts on the subject would be very welcome!

Hi Hamish. Instead of adding another subscribe button with your current vendor, who doesn’t allow an “Any Amount” option, could you put a Buy Me a Coffee” link on your site/pages? I believe they allow any amounts.

Tbh Hamish it may be easier to put the subs up a bit ? Yours is the only photo site or magazine I subscribe to now - also free for life for publishers is OTT generosity I think ?

Yes, the "Buy me a coffee" feature is what appears on a light meter app I use. The app is written by a guy in Italy. Every once in a while, after using the app, I buy him a cappuccino. $5 I think. In the course of a year I support him with about $50 because I use the app at least 100 times a year.

'Buy me a coffee' seems like a good idea although it would be good to hear from some actual users. The basic low subscription could then be left as it is to get more people to make a regular contribution...

Hi Hamish, Could 'Patreon' be a good option for you to use to increase revenue and solve the issue ad hoc donations, premium membership etc.

I think it's important to consider content streams/segmentation if you add another sub layer. Gating user submitted content would be problematic though.
