A Couple of New Features for 35mmc

By Hamish Gill

Just a couple of little features, mostly for contributors really.

First, if you are a contributor, you can now add various contact details to your profile.

In the backend of the website it looks like this:

Put the details in the boxes, then switch the “show on author page” and you will end up with an author page that looks like this:

Also, we now have “Contributor Only” posts – these are for sharing ideas with other contributors and can’t be seen by anyone else.

If you want to publish a contributor only post, add “contributor only” to the title and I will set the appropriate settings when I publish it. These post do NOT get sent out via the email subscription system, and will only show in the feed on the homepage to contributors when they are logged in.

The idea of these posts is not to hide normal content from readers, it is to ask questions or propose ideas to other contributors. For eg, sometimes I get asked to review products that don’t interest me, so I might ask here if there is a contributor who wants to do the review.

Hopefully this all makes sense – let me know any questions

Could a few of you contributors also comment on the post that you should only be able to see… and if you can see it and aren’t a contributor, please let me know too!

Thanks,

Hi Hamish - I went to another browser where I wasn't logged in and I could see this post. Perhaps the alternative browser knows I'm a contributor but I don't think I've ever accessed 35mmc on it. Just letting you know. Ed

This one is visible, it's the other one you should only be able to see when logged in as a contributor

I saw the "test" post as well.

Hamish, a suggestion: Please add flickr as an option for profile URL. I still use it regularly, and I'd guess other contributors do as well.

I would have used a flickr-specific field but I just stuck my flickr link in one that seemed open...

Great ideas Hamish! To test this on my PC, I logged into 35mmc, and since I'm a contributor, I saw the contributor-only test posting on the site's Today's Posts opening page. I then logged OUT of 35mmc... but left the computer on. I then could NOT see the test posting. This implied that contributors must be logged in to see contributor-only content (which is logical). I tested THAT by logging out, shutting down the PC, restarting, and logging back in with the "Remember Me" button pressed. And when I then logged out, restarted the PC, and opened 35mmc, I could STILL see contributor-only content (since my login was "remembered").

It seems then that logging into 35mmc with "Remember Me" activated will preserve one's access to contributor-only content until the site automatically logs one out (which seems to happen periodically.)
