New Film Cameras: The Lomography MC-A and SilverBridges WideluxX

By Hamish Gill

Two new film cameras on the horizon, the Lomography MC-A and SilverBridges WideluxX – it’s not often we get one new film camera coming down the road, so with there being two, I thought I would give a bit of a shout out to them both in one exciting hit!

First the Lomography MC-A

This new camera from Lomography has actually been announced today (I have already requested a review copy, so hopefully that will come my way at some point relatively soon). With it being announced today, it is also already available to preorder off the Lomography website here (with delivery in time for Christmas).

I haven’t tried or even held the camera yet, but on paper at least it’s looking really bloody impressive. It’s full frame, autofocus with manual zone focus option, both down to 0.4m. It also has the option to be shot in a full automatic mode as well as having both aperture and shutter controls for aperture priority and full manual overrides. It has DX code reading and manual overrides. Auto flash and manual flash with a pc port for an external flash with a few flash modes too – the flash is also off by default. It has a full metal body, what is being described as a premium 32mm 2.8 lens and a screen on the top for changing the settings. It even allows for multiple exposures. It does, in the pictures, look a little on the large side – i.e. more like a Fuji Klasse than a Ricoh GR1 – but with the level of features, that’s no real surprise… and all for £449…! In short, if this thing lives up to it’s spec list, it is going to be bloody incredible – I’m very excited about this, I can’t wait to review it!!

SilverBridges Unveils WideluxX™ Prototype 0001

Next up, somewhat further down the track, but arguably just as exciting is the new WideluxX from SliverBridges. This is the product of the teaming up of Charys Schuler and Marwan El Mozayen of Silvergrain Classics and Jeff and Susan Bridges. Jeff Bridges (the actor) is well known for his love of the original Widelux, and with Susan has teamed up with Charys and Marwan to bring back this classic panoramic camera. Charys has shared a load of information on the Silvergrain website blog here, and there’s also a load to be read on the Wideluxx website here with a video coming soon and a newsletter sign-up. It feels like this project is still very much in the prototype stages, but nonetheless is very exciting indeed! Definitely one to keep an eye on, and sure as anything, I will be nagging them for a review camera as soon as possible too!!

Two new film cameras to talk about in one week – and both look very interesting indeed!! Very exciting!!

If we're going by cameras with ties to Hollywood, gimme Bill Murray's Brooks Veriwide from Ghostbusters. I'm glad this project exists and wish them continuing success; but I could never get used to the warped perspective of pano cameras with rotating lenses.

Bill Murray, anytime, I'm sure he is a real sweetheart. But I want to this thing with Bridges where you move around while the lens swings and you have him twice on one image ;))

A camera from Lomography that's not "Lomo", hard to believe...

Love the idea of the WideluxX, but can't imagine paying the US$2-3k it will likely cost.

Amazing how Lomography can keep releasing quality film cameras without the fanfare that we got with the Pentax 17, Rollei 35 AF, and the forever-developing camera from Analogue. The MC-A looks like a pretty full-featured point-and-shoot for less money than the 17, which is good to see.

"It does, in the pictures, look a little on the large side"
On Lomography's website I found the specs:
What are the dimensions and the weight of the Lomo MC-A?
Camera dimensions: 125.8 mm(w) x 69.5 mm(h) x 42 mm(d) or 4.9 x 2.7 x 1.6 inches
Weight: 332g (battery excluded) or 0.7 pound
