The Traveling Yashica

By Hamish Gill

I saw a book on a bench the other day, I didn’t pick it up but I did wonder if it was one of those books that gets read and then left somewhere for another person to pick up and read. Me being me, it made me think how this could translate into the world of photography…The Plan…

I have decided to send my Yashica T5 around some of the nice folks I cross paths with on twitter, get them to shoot a roll of film then send the camera to someone else who wants to take part.

All I ask is that anyone who ends up with the camera sends me some photos and a little bit of a backstory to go with them.

The Traveling Yashica has so far visited:

The Rules:

  • The camera must be shipped either as wisely or more wisely then you received it ie. lots of bubble wrap around the little black cardboard box it comes in and lots of bubble wrap around the camera inside the box!
  • Postage is paid for once when you send it on to the next person – and don’t be tight on the shipping type, we don’t want it going missing! 🙂
  • When shipping the camera mark it as having no value so it doesn’t incur customs charges for the next person
  • One film can be shot with the camera.
  • You have 1 week maximum to shoot the film.
  • You must be a member of twitter, follow me and neighbouring participants
  • You must inform me when you receive the camera and when you have sent it on.
  • Decision with whom the camera goes to next is mine. The order above is subject to change at my discretion.
  • When the camera eventually dies, I want it back … Until then, it can keep traveling … Lets see how many miles it can do! 🙂

And that should do … unless anyone can think of anything else that might keep it safe?

If you would like to take part, follow me on twitter and get in touch.

(This project is currently closed to new people – it needs to catch up a bit with the long list of people first)

And finally, one odd coincidence, just after I bought the Yashica T5, 6 months before I even started this blog, I took photos of it in front of a world map… Completely forgotten I had done it, but the photo turned ou quite useful when I found it again today (7th July 2014).

[…] TravelingYashica is an interesting journey of a compact, point and shoot Yashica T5 film camera that started from UK  in 2013 by Hamish Gill. The concept is simple – you receive the camera, you shoot a roll of film on it and ship it to the next person. You develop your roll of  film and share your experience with the camera and the images you like in your set of exposures from a single roll of film. […]

[…] But probably the biggest thing I enjoy about the actual act of shooting film is that I very much like the simplicity of the cameras compared to digital cameras. It is in fact this simplicity of equipment that triggered my starting of 35mmc a few years back when I bought my Yashica T5 (now the Travelling Yashica). […]
