A group chat for contributors / paid subs

By Hamish Gill

I am thinking about setting up maybe a whatsapp group chat or similar for contributors. Open to ideas around a platform, as long as it’s nothing too complicated to use.

Who would be interested?

Suggestions, thoughts, comments?

I started taking photos at the age of 9. Since then I've taken photos for a hobby, sold cameras for a living, and for a little more than decade I've been a professional photographer and, of course, weekly contributor to 35mmc.

Discussion, comments are linked to photos and stories. In a chat group one could discuss things independent of posts and that could be interesting. However, I avoid using Whatsapp and similar and I am using exclusively 'Signal'. I also donate them something once in a while. I read the interesting sentence: if something is free in the internet, you are the product.

Hi Hamish, I would certainly be interested, though I would also have some concerns. I am in a group for my local invertebrate group... it's quiet enough in the winter, but at this time of year it can be rather a lot. I really ought to get around to silencing notifications from the group. It can get a little overused at times and this is just a small group of people. With the group I am in, potentially interesting information can disappear in a matter of minutes under the sheer volume of messages about something else and I find I end up disengaging for periods. There is a disproportionate number of retired folk and they have time for lots of messages (I haven't too long to go, but haven't got to that point yet). Perhaps the 35mmc crew has a similar profile, I don't know. I am not very good with Whatsapp settings and I am sure it is possible to manage all this better than I do, so maybe some guidance on it's use would be worthwhile.

I wonder if a 35mmc one might require some rules for subjects and frequency, especially allowing for time zones. Perhaps potentially longer conversations could be referred to individual messaging to keep the chat manageable. I can certainly see lots of benefits too. I suspect I would use it for appealing for help with particular cameras, processing issues, films etc.

Got to be worth a trial at least I think, maybe with a set date to review it's use.

Best regards Paul

Paul I think you should leave your group and start another with a more tightly defined subject area. that should reduce the numbers and improve relevance to you. Thought your comment on we oldies was a tad unnecessary...

Hi Hamish,

I think it’s a good idea to create a platform for contributors, but I think a single group chat will become very chaotic, in particular in case people don’t quote the comment they might be responding to.
Don from Crown+Flint has created a Discord group, part of which is public, some of it is limited to beta testers. Things a separated into categories. That works reasonably well.
Don’t forget, I am one of those Germans… :-)

I would be happy to be in a WhatsApp group, or whatever people feel is best to use.

WhatsaApp for me too. My specific interest would be non-Leica M lenses in particular better insights on China made lenses and not so much Cosina production..
