A couple of website issues fixed

By Hamish Gill

Hi all,

I know this feels somewhat ongoing at this stage… if it does for you, you can be assured it does for me… but I have just fixed/had fixed a couple of issues as well as (hopefully) speeded up the site even more.

I could do with a bit of feedback on the issues, so..

  • Is anyone still having the issue where the lead image (or any other images within the post) are missing?
  • Can anyone see any posts on the website that have comments disabled, or are in any other way not allowing you to comment on them?
  • Is anyone having any issues logging in?
  • Does the website seem faster?
  • Do the ads seem to be slightly less obtrusive toward the top of posts?
  • Are any contributors still experiencing the content editor without the “visual” option?

Any thoughts on any of the above, or any other issues welcome!

Thanks

Hamish

HA, that old chestnut! Yes, sorry - for now, just click "comment" in the email and scroll up. I need the website to be working properly before I try and fix this issue as it is one caused by an external provider (jetpack)

Well it is how I find all your latest posts so… I mean the world won’t stop turning because of it and probably if were a paid member or contributor I would get pop Up notifications or texts when anything new is up.

To answer each in turn:
Is anyone still having the issue where the lead image (or any other images within the post) are missing? - I don't get a lead image in my emails - they often don't show in outlook, but a left click does not give a 'show pictures' option as on other mail. All images seem to be there in the browser though and the notification that crops up on screen shows the pictures too...
Can anyone see any posts on the website that have comments disabled, or are in any other way not allowing you to comment on them? - Not found that so far: will email if I get any instances.
Is anyone having any issues logging in? - Less! I used to get logged out frequently, so got hit with adverts, but it seems (says he touching wood) that it keeps me in better and I'm seeing far fewer ads on the way...
Does the website seem faster? - It didn't seem slow before, but I've got reasonably fast broadband..
Do the ads seem to be slightly less obtrusive toward the top of posts? - I see them less because of not getting logged out so often...
Are any contributors still experiencing the content editor without the “visual” option? - I've not done any major editing since the change, but the visual editor seems to be there each time I've tried it out.

..but I note that I don't get an option to edit posts - the above should have been broken into separate lines rather than all in one block - the editor appears to have ignored any carriage returns... ...this should be separated from the previous text by two carriage returns.

Bob, thanks! The email stuff is a little out my hands but I am going to chat to Jetpack about it. Otherwise, good news, thanks!

So fat, so good eccept:
When logged in and opening the tab with 35mmc again (Safari on iOS), I often get tons of ads, need to reload the page to make them go away.
In the article overview on the homepage, in Safari iOS I still don’t the author’s name or comment count.
Good luck, Hamish!

Hi Erik, can you send me a screenshot of the homepage issues. Sorry about the need to refresh. I’m hoping now the website is now so fast it’s less of an issue…?

Yeah I'm the same - opening the site for the first time even when logged in gives ads, which are cleared if you reload the homepage, or click an article and then move past the first pop-up ad. Same as the old site. Safari Mac OS or iOS Good luck!

Of course immediately I wrote my comment, I no longer see the issue with ads and having to reload. Or arre you referring to the missing authors and comment counts on the homepage?

Yep I second the other guy on the email link. However if the comment button shows in the email then hitting that works. If it’s not there then it works hitting the title header but not the underlined link. Improving guess.

- Is anyone still having the issue where the lead image (or any other images within the post) are missing?
I never encountered this. I'm running an Intel laptop and browsing with MSFT Edge with uBlock Origin.
- Can anyone see any posts on the website that have comments disabled, or are in any other way not allowing you to comment on them?
Clearing my cache the other day fixed this for me.
- Is anyone having any issues logging in?
Not been an issue for me.
- Does the website seem faster?
Yes (although I don't have extensive historical perspective)
- Do the ads seem to be slightly less obtrusive toward the top of posts?
What ads? :-)
- Are any contributors still experiencing the content editor without the “visual” option?
No. I started my article pre-update. Reviewed it once where I saw the text editor but my last edits and review all went to the visual editor.

Good job!

Link to article in e-mail still results in a blank page on a recent iPad with the latest IOS and all updates. The comment link seems to work. Sometimes a page does not load until an advert pop-up is closed when navigating within the site.

Still having difficulty Hamish opening 35mmc.com here in New Zealand at the far end of the World Wide Web. But instead of clicking on Read More ( which shows an error) if I click on Comments and scroll back up to the article on my iPad it mostly works OK
