Leica-R Summicron 50/2 on Nikon F3

By Julian Tanase

In a recent article on my website I spoke about a Leica-R Summicron 50/2 (v2) being converted to Nikon F mount, by means of a Nikon F mount ring (Leitax). As far as I know, this lens was made in 1985 in Canada. After the conversion, I could not wait to take the lens out for a spin, so I loaded some Agfa APX 100 (@80) into my Nikon F3 and went to my local natural park (of sorts). Weather was pretty cold, windy and somewhat slightly overcast, with the occasional, but brief, sun burst. All in all decent light.

Looking into how this lens will perform after conversion, I done some research prior. It became clear that the lens will not behave as I am used to (aperture, metering) due to linkage issues. I knew the lens will not be able to perform in aperture priority mode (which is how I employ the Nikon F3 usually). While not an issue, I wanted to check if metering in aperture priority was possible with this lens, so I shot the entire roll of film by doing just that: focus at f2 (from 5.6 upwards, the viewfinder gets dimmer and dimmer, sort of DOF lever action), set the desired aperture, recompose and shoot.

Well, it worked; the negative was properly exposed and in focus. I haven’t messed with the frames in post, other than slightly cropping the margins. No sharpness or contrast intervention whatsoever.

It is better than my Nikkor lenses? Leica glass is something of a legend (if the word is not too big), and while the results do indeed appear a tad sharper and more contrasty than say, Nikkor 50/2, I cannot swear on it. I am not proficient enough to run serious tests on this glass, nor would I engage in making such comparisons for something I would not know where to start. And anyways, plenty of such articles on the wide web, and no shortage of pro and cons opinions on the matter. I am just happy the Leica-R Sumicron 50/2 lens, converted to Nikon F mount, proves to be a good addition to my otherwise beautiful, trusty Nikon lens herd.

I'd love one of these - I nearly bought one a few times!

I often wonder about which lens might be better. I'm not good enough behind the lens to squeeze the best out of any given lens. While Leitz glass (along with well build bodies) gave Leica a leg up back in the day, I'm perfectly happy with the TTArtisan lens I bought for the M3. I had the F2 out yesterday with the 105/2.5 and wish that I had put the 35/2 on before I left the house.

On my Minoltas ( X700, X500, XD5, SRT 101b and Super ) i use sometimes 50mm f2 lenses. And especially an early MD Rokkor ( MD I ) 50mm f2 and a late MD ( MD III ) 50mm f2 are very good lenses in terms of sharpness and contrast, even at f2.

I have used Nikon and Leica glass extensively over decades of photography. Each has their "personality" which will only be an advantage over the other when it's recognized and used in a situation where said "personality" benefits the creation of an expressive image. If you are just creating "I was there" images it's a wash. All this being said the differences are mainly inconsequential now that most images are post processed in some sort of computer program. In the days of film it was more of an issue.

It's a nice exercise in what can be done mechanically and I'm happy it worked out for you. Personally I would have bought a Leica SLR to use the camera on. Of course this would start another round of GAS!

Julian,
The results look very sharp to me. Since it sounds like you tinker a bit, let me ask this question:
I have a nice Fed-3 camera that uses Leica Thread Mount lenses. I have a couple of Russian 50mm lenses, but they aren't sharp. I don't want to buy a true Leica LTM lens because of the cost. Do you know of any conversion method for using a common brand lens for Leica or Leica-similar bodies including the Fed-3?

Adapters appear to exist. Novoflex appear to have at least two, to mount Olympus and Nikon lenses on LTM cameras. However, for dumb adapters they are very expensive, though the one Novoflex adapter I have (OM to Sony E) seems very well made.

For what it's worth this lens barely outperforms the Nikon AF 50mm F1.8 according to the old Photodo mtf tests (overall scores of 4.5 and 4.4 respectively). The Leica's main advantage is at F2 and even there it's not a big difference. From F2.8 and smaller they are effectively the same. The Nikkor is of course (much) cheaper and plastickier. And not 'legendary'.

As both a Nikon and Leica SLR user I'm sceptical that there is a noticeable difference in image quality, but if you only have a Nikon body available the conversion is easy to do. Urth make a conversion kit (I think about £35?) and it's a DIY and fully reversable job (just don't loose the tiny ball bearing that gives you the 'click' aperture stops.

Thanks for sharing this conversation and the photos. I've compared digital shots from my Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AIS with my Leica 50mm f/2 V5 (M mount), and they are very close. I do think the 50mm Summicron (especially R mount) is one of the better values in the Leica world, but "value" is relative.
