New website – Live! (now help me find the weird stuff)

By Hamish Gill

The NEW website is live and working (and fast!!). I’m going to keep it free of adverts for the weekend I think, so please enjoy the ad-free experience until then!

In the meanwhile, can you please have a look for anything that doesn’t seem right, comment below, and I will compile a list to give to the clever web people tomorrow.

Thanks, and enjoy!!

Known issues:

  • Comments are centre justified on mobile and so hard to read
  • No reply button on comments
  • Spam comments
  • The membership system for ad-free access is inactive (this is because there are no ads for anyone for now)
  • Back end restrictions (users can edit categories and tags)
  • “Access” header on post list view makes the post title go very thin
  • No “visual” editor for contributors
  • Comment count for users reset to 0
  • Dates on pending posts set back to 1970
  • Subscribe links in sidebar
  • Duplication of posts in “today” and “latest” & post order
  • Featured image on “today’s post” is cropped to 3×2
  • Wide aspect ratio featured images are being stretched vertically. See here vs how it should look here
  • Some taller images seem to still be being squashed too, see here, and here– Top level menu item not accessible on mobile
  • Images missing on team page, and books page. Does this mean other images might be missing too?
  • Link to read comments and post a comment from meta at the top of the post goes to the wrong place in the content on mobile
  • No email subscribe in footer
  • Email subscribe in sidebar, but it looks odd
  • Missing post: https://www.35mmc.com/24/10/2023/godox-ad100-pro-review-a-pint-size-power-packed-studio-flash/
  • Comments don’t display the date on the comment in the front end on replies
  • Default large image size 1024 on long edge
  • Yoast seo premium gone (lots of redirects I had created with it not there…)
  • Jetpack emails don’t have 35mmc logo at the top
  • Remove Jetpack from backend for contributors and paid subs
  • Access to edit blocks in sidebar
  • Contribute and subscribe buttons/Scroll away buttons
  • No post name on tweet button
  • Paypal IPN thing
  • Superflous plugins
  • Share buttons at top too
  • ULs etc not showing in visual editor
  • /Shop URLs aren’t working
  • Visual editor not displaying as default for most users
  • CSS on tiny mce
  • Black links in contributor banner
  • Style on “here” in footer
  • Yoast news plugin
  • 35mmc logo on login screen
  • Admin bar back end for admin over logo
  • “ACF PRO —ACF will soon escape unsafe HTML…” message in back end
  • Casheing issues (fixed for now)

Friday, 19th, late: Just a little update, The website seems to be stable now – though there are still a few little issues. Please do keep letting me know if you spot anything odd!!

Tuesday 23rd: very nearly there

Congrats for the new site, looks great! I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but it does not allow me to upload pictures in the contributors' section (says "Sorry, you are not allowed to upload files." even if I have never had any problem before).

Ah, good to know. I was all ready to subscribe. But I can wait until next week. ;-) Otherwise, everything else seems to be working smoothly.

The option for editing existing posts from the dashboard seems to have gone (I can view but not edit) - this was useful for correcting typos and correcting wording after user comments...

Hi Hamish,
Just seen this new site and it looks very good.
Not seeing any dates against the comments folk make.
Viewing on a desktop BTW.
Many thanks for all your efforts.

I can now edit existing posts, but it is using an editor with all over it - I think we used to have an option of editor, but I can't see the switch anymore... Replies in comments still not working, hence replying in another comment...

..that should have been 'an editor with codes all over it'... also I can't edit comments, even just after I've posted them...

Did this progress? I noticed a reference in the latest update about 'visual editor in the back end'.. which sounds like it might have been fixed, but I'm still seeing codes, so might have missed an option...

Hello mate, yeah, possibly an odd one - if you go into your profile there should be a tick box to switch the visual editor back on. Can you have a look and let me know.

Progress! (On mobile platform at least). Slightly confusing though... In my profile I had an unchecked box saying Disable visual editor. When I checked it, it made no difference, but when I unchecked it again, things looked better. Will try on a desktop platform when I get the chance....

I used to look at it and disregard what it said if I thought it was wrong (it thought a lot of my writing was too 'passive')... it did stop me from using some really long sentences (something I'm prone to)...

Yes, but it doesn't seem to make any difference to anything. Strange as the 'readability' traffic lights still show up in the list of my posts, but no readability info in the side column...

Hi Hamish - new website is splendid. Congratulations to all concerned. There are still wrinkles but no blank screens and much more responsive. Using the link from the emails now performs as expected but there is still a small 'feature' regarding log in status. After using the link to access 35mmc the 'login' prompt is still visible in the top right corner even though I am already logged in.

Clicking login takes me to a login page but after filling in id and password it tells me I'm already logged in. I'm using Firefox on a Macbook Pro

Hi Hamish, well done and hopefully it's nearly there. Spotted a new one today:
Article header images have stopped appearing on the home page in Opera browser on Android (phone or tablet). They were OK a couple of days ago. They appear fine on the individual article pages. Home page images are OK in other browsers (Chrome, DuckDuckGo).
Thanks!

Actually, an update on the Opera browser images issue - on the individual article pages you get the header image but none of the other ones.

Hi Hamish, mostly looking good, just three comments:

1: thanks for fixing the bias for the comments, it already looks a lot better
2: the navigation bar is not fixed to the top (this is chrome Android mobile), it's at the bottom of the top third, which interrupts the smooth flow of reading, or reduces the useful size of the screen by 1/3, depending on perspective
3: I have to switch to desktop browsing mode to be able to click on articles/post comments

Thanks, also I'm hoping to post something when I can get photos scanned, expect something in the next month or two!
